CHAPTER 2 - Declan
“Are you f*****g kidding me? A Jenkins?” I snapped at Mom. She Just told me I would be marrying the Jenkins girl.
I loathed her more than anything else. She was untidy, always clinging to Julie as if her life depended on it.
I used to see how she would always glance at me whenever she saw me. Her daggers at me made me want to throw up and now I have to marry that girl?
“f**k!” I growled, punching through the wall
“I will not marry her!” I started as Mum sighs behind me.
“Of course you will. She’s someone that would help this family. I took time to look at her. She’s bright, volunteers at different shelters and also runs a book club for children with disabilities. You need such a kind person in your life after that scandal of yours,” she insisted.
Didn’t she care about my feelings? I could never love such a woman. She’s everything I hate about a woman.
“Did you look at that woman? She looks like someone they just picked up from the street. How do I marry such a girl?” I asked Mum, who sighed heavily.
She tilted her head, looking at me pitifully. She blinked back her tears as she came closer to where I was standing.
“I know it’s hard, my baby, but as future alpha and leader of this pack. You need someone like her. A lot of people want to abolish the tradition of having an alpha leader. They want to be independent,” she tried to explain to me as I shook my head.
This wasn’t right.
I shouldn’t marry for the sake of duty.
I should marry because I love that woman and want to spend the rest of my life with her, not because of duty.
“We are under threat. The only way to make this work is if you marry that girl. Her family has had an influence over the elders for decades. They can easily sway the elders to do our bidding.” She took hold of my hands, trying to convince me.
“I am not marrying such a person. I will make this different. We don’t need her,” I retorted, removing my hands from hers.
“Unfortunately, we need this alliance. As much as you hate it. This will have to happen.” She maintained as I scoffed, staring straight into her eyes.
There was an uneasiness in her eyes. For years, I have never seen fear in her eyes unless her grandmother came to visit.
“David can marry her instead. It would be an alliance,” I suggested, as she scoffed.
“Is David or Drake the future alpha?” She asked me, looking disappointed.
“I don’t love her and will never love her. I love another woman. She knows that!” I growled.
“Love? You would do well to forget about that girl,” Mum said, making her way towards the door as I swallowed hard.
How will I explain this to Harper? How will I tell her that I broke up with her because Mum thinks I should marry that girl out of duty? I hated this family. If I was alpha, I would change all this nonsense about duty.
>>>>
Heading back into the living room, my eyes met with everyone who suddenly turned to look at me as Mum smiled as if she had achieved something.
I shifted my attention to the Jenkins girl who was sitting between her parents, her hands clasped together on her lap.
“Harper is my mate. What happened to that tradition?” I questioned, shifting my attention to my father, who let out a low growl as he sat back.
My mother gasped, looking at me, then back to the Jenkins girl, who lowered her head.
“You expect me to reject my mate because of her? What happens if she finds her mate?” I asked, turning to look at her.
“Will you reject him for this?” I asked her as she swallowed hard, tears filling her eyes.
I hated it.
I hated everything about this arrangement. Mum should have spoken to me before they spoke to this family.
Her brother is another asshole that I wouldn’t even want to be associated with.
Then there’s her. She looks like she’s in her thirties already.
“Don’t you care about your mate?” I asked, walking towards her as she clenched on tight to her bag. Her heart thundered as she looked up at her father and mother.
“Dec! That’s’ enough!” My father slammed his hand on the table.
“You are forcing my hand now,” Dad threatened as I looked into his eyes.
“Don’t you care about your daughter’s happiness? Why force her to marry me? What about her mate?” I asked, as she scoffed shaking her head nonchalantly
“Oh! That’s right, you want this because you have no wolf and want to force yourself on me, right?” I asked,
She choked back her tears as gasps filled the room. Her parents probably didn’t know that their precious daughter didn’t have any wolf in there.
My mother’s eyes widened. "Is that true?”
“How did you--?” The Jenkins girl stuttered as she looked at me with so much pain in her eyes.
“Is this true?” Her mother turned to her as she shook her head. Tears streaming down her face.
“I am sorry,” she responded, before storming out of the house.
I lowered my head, smirking, as her parents looked at Mum and Dad in shock. “We apologise. We were not aware” her mother was the one who bowed her head.
“It’s fine. A wolf doesn’t define someone. It must have been hard for her to keep this from everyone.” My mother, as always, tried to be the voice of reason among all of us.
“Declan, Find Raziela and apologise to her,” Dad ordered as I scoffed, looking at Mum, hoped she would have to say something to him.
‘I need you to convince her to marry you. Or else,’ my father linked to me as he smiled vividly.
I knew what Dad was capable of, and that threat wasn’t something that I should take lightly. Turning on my heel, I made my way out of the living room.
“Which way?” I asked my beta Chris as he pointed towards the door. I took off rushing after her as I picked up her scent going towards the gate.
Was she thinking of running out of here? I inwardly thought as I ran after her.
“Hey come back here!” I shouted, running after her. She was damn fast for someone who has no wolf.
I could easily shift, but I didn’t want to ruin my joggers. Harper bought them for me a few months ago and immediately became my favourite.
“Hey wait!” I shouted as she opened the gate, rushing out on the streets. How the f**k did she know the passcode to the gate? I inwardly asked myself.
“Hey stop!” I shouted as she slips on the pavement, rolling over to the road.
“Stay the f**k away from me,” she warned as she got up on her feet. She had twisted her ankle in the process and was limping.
“Get back inside now!” I ordered.
‘How did you know?” She asked me, panting heavily as I sighed heavily.
“Doesn’t matter. I know that you have no wolf. Now let’s get back inside!” I ordered, as she scoffed, wiping her tears.
“No! You are evil and I am not going anywhere with you,” she maintained as she limps back into the road as I growled.
“The life of someone I love depends on you, so now let’s get back inside! If you don’t come with me, Harper’s life depends on it,” I insisted, taking a step towards me.
“You don’t know what you have done. You have just ruined my life. And you expect me to f*****g care about your girlfriend? Forget it!” she sniffled back.
“f**k you and your lover” She turned about to leave but suddenly lights flashed in front of her. She stood there like a deer, seeing spotlights.
“Get out of the way!” I screamed, running after her as she covered her ears as the car approached where she was standing. The car honked as loud as it could for her to move, but it was like she was frozen.
“Hey!” I lunged at her, grabbing her in my arms as I rolled over to the side with her. “No! NO! Mama!” she cried as I shield her head from hitting the ground. Underneath me she stiffened, muttering things which didn’t make any sense to me.
“Mama?” she whispered before passing out in my arms.
“f**k!’ I growled before I lifted her off the ground.
