CHAPTER 4 - Declan
For days now I tried to get in touch with Harper, but she wouldn’t pick up my calls or come out when I saw her at their house. I needed to speak with her, but right now, it wouldn’t be possible.
“Did you organize for the engagement ring?” Mum asked me, bringing me back from the train of thought I was in. I was thinking about Harper and what she must be going through right now. Could it be that Dad threatened her as well?
A few days ago Dad threatened that if I didn’t marry that Jenkins girl, Harper and her family would be the ones to pay for my stubbornness., that’s why I had to agree to marry that girl even though I feel absolutely nothing but hatred towards her.
“I think you are planning everything. Get it yourself,” I responded, turning on my heel to leave, but my eyes met with Dad’s who was also in my room.
“Am I the one marrying her or you??” He asked me as I swallowed hard the lump that formed in my throat. Unable to respond to him because I know how Dad can be. He might take out his frustrations on Harper and her family.
“It’s me. I will pass through the shop to get her a ring,” I stated, about to walk away.
“Go with her. I already made an appointment for you at the jewel Of Winterfur and an appointment for the two of you,” Mum retorts as I scoffed turning to look at her. This wasn’t something I expected I would have to be doing.
“Just go with her there. Make sure you don’t upset her,” Mum insisted as I glanced at Dad who had his hands in his pockets.
He glared at me as I walked away.
“Dec!” Dad shouted as I made my way out of the room, making me halt in my steps as I turned to look into his eyes. He didn’t seem happy, and I knew it probably had something to do with me.
“Remember? You promised me you would be responsible for that girl,” He stated as I nodded my head before making my way to the car.
“Are you sure you want to do this?” David asked me as I walked past him. He didn’t understand what kind of person Dad was. I have seen him torture someone because they looked at Mum in the wrong way.
Going against him would be a stupid idea. Especially if he thinks what he's doing is for the benefit of the pack. Nothing would stand in his way, not even his son’s happiness.
“I have to. Will see you later,” I said to him, starting the engine of the car and I drive away. I knew the place where she stayed but I had never really gone past the gate because we would pick Julie up several times with Harper.
Finally pulled over into the yard. Ahead of me was a state-of-the-art mansion with glass from top to bottom. The three-story building was something that if I was on good terms with him, I would want to know how they came up with the design.
I pulled over in front, then made my way to the door. Before I could ring the doorbell, the door swung open, and it was her mother.
“Mrs. Jenkins” I faked a smile as she beamed with a smile. She wore a floor-length dress and her hair fell freely.
“Your mother told me you would be here soon. Please come in.” She beamed with a smile as I nodded my head. I tried so much as a fake a smile but inside me, all I wanted was to burst out. I hated every minute of this. Hated the fact I had to pick her up to get an engagement ring.
“Please come in. I will get her for you” her mother started making her way up the stairs I sighed heavily settling down in the living room as I looked around the pictures in the room.
“She will be down soon,” her mother announced as I gave her an affirmative nod. “Here” She offered me a plate with egg tarts as she beamed with a smile.
“Have some,” she said to me as I cleared my throat.
“I’m good,” I responded to her, and she raised her eyebrows.
“I am not trying to kill you.” She said to me as I nod my head, taking one, trying it as I take a bit of it. It was exactly like the way Nana used to make it.
“This is nice,” I said to her as she leaves the plate on the table. “Help yourself. Let me get Raziela” She smiled with a smile before she left the room again. My stomach h was rumbling after not eating for days.
Raziela? Who has a name like that, honestly?
Couldn’t resist the egg tarts. Before I knew it, I was on my fourth in a matter of minutes. I took a bite of one and just then, the Jenkins girl showed up as she stared at me. I took the last piece and placed it on the plate as I got up to my feet.
Her eyes were swollen and her face was all red as she looked into my eyes. “My Mum tells me I should go somewhere with you?” She asked, her voice almost breaking as I nod my head.
“Let’s go” I got up from the chair as her mother just walked into the living room. “Hey, I packed some for you” She offered me a lunch box as the Jenkins girl turned on her heel walking out of the room.
She got outside and went straight to the car. As I got into the car and she got in as well, she sat back and today she was awfully quiet for someone who was always arrogant.
“My mother says we need to get an engagement ring,” I stated, and she was just staring out the window without responding. I heard her sniffle back after some time.
I didn’t ask what was happening, but just pulled over in front of the jewellery shop and stepped out of the car. How did Dad expect me to make her happy when I hated her?
She quickly wiped her tears before getting out of the car and made her way into the shop.
“Alpha prince! Ms. Jenkins. My name is Robbie. I will be helping you today,” he beamed with a smile as he gestured with his hands to lead the way.
I settled down on the chair, as did the Jenkins girl, who seemed uninterested in everything that was happening.
“Can we see your limited collection?” I asked him and he gave me an affirmative nod, he snapped his fingers, and they brought out the trolleys with all the jewellery.
“Pick one,” I instructed her, but she didn’t respond. instead looked like she was in deep thought. I leaned over to her and she just focused on her phone.
“I said—“
“Heard what you said the first time. Will have this one” She pointed to the simplest engagement ring as I turned to look at her. She must be joking to think she would wear such an engagement ring.
“It’s cheap. Why is it even in this collection?” I snapped towards Robbie as he looks at her.
“You think I would let you pick a ring for me? You are joking,” she stated as she got up from the chair.
“It’s cheap and our parents won’t—“
“I don’t care what they think. That’s your problem to deal with,” she retorted as I grab one of the diamond rings I had my eye on this entire time.
I grabbed her hand, turning her to look at me. “Listen, can’t you just do something without making my life harder than it already is?” I asked her, and she tilted her head.
“I lost my friend because you didn’t have the guts to say no. hate you for that,” she said as I take her hand trying to force the ring on her.
“Let me go!” She cried as I tried to force the ring on her finger. She turned around, her back against me as I pulled her closer to me, my hand intertwined with her.
“You will do as you are told,” I whispered in her ears while I held her hands tight. Just then, the door swung open and my eyes met with Harper’s.
Fuck! I muttered, my head so close to the Jenkins girl who tried to free herself. She looked at me, then the Jenkins girl, as she shook her head in disbelief.
