RAE
“Hi, Jason,” I waved, leaning on my tiptoes, blocking off the room behind me.
My sudden high-pitched voice was unrecognizable, but Jason’s expression couldn’t be read either.
So I lowered my hand, taking a nervous glance at my back.
My grip on the door knob loosened. Where did he go?
I unconsciously moved from the doorway and Jason and a group carrying portable wardrobes filled with stunning wedding dresses filed in.
“I made certain you wouldn’t be disturbed.” His baritone was slightly ominous. “But Rachel, we can no longer delay this conversation.”
“Sure,” I said absentmindedly, staring at the space underneath my bed and then the closet.
Did he climb out the window again? How had he even done that? This was the top floor of a four-story building.
“Rachel.”
My head snapped up. “Yes?”
“Where’s your mind? I’ve been talking to you,” Jason asked, all calm and composed in his tux.
I glanced at the audience we had and cleared my throat, closing the gap between us, rubbing my sweaty palms on my thighs.
“Sorry. I’m just overwhelmed.” My heart was about to implode.
Had he seen his son here? Would his Alpha wolf be able to catch Malachar’s lingering woodsy scent, or was this a sign that I was gone?
In my mate’s presence, I was thinking about another man.
His freaking son.
Oh, my goodness. I had truly lost it.
“Leave us,” Jason commanded the stylists after a tense moment, and they quickly scurried away.
“I… I also have something to tell you.”
His head bobbed. “Okay, but about my son, we’re estranged. I have tried to be a father to Malachar, but he cut ties with me. I don’t know why he’s back—“
“I cheated on you last Christmas!” Tears wet my cheeks.
I willed the unsaid words to roll out like the rest, but nothing came forth. I was a coward.
After a long minute, Jason cupped my face with his hand. I stared into his blue eyes, they didn’t have smoky greyish hues like his son’s. They were just plain, like a cold ocean.
This was also the most physical contact we’d ever had.
Was it a good thing now? Or was he about to reject me for what I did?
“I’m sorry,” I whispered, and a tear dropped before I could lower my head.
“You did nothing wrong.”
“What?” I gave him an utterly puzzled look.
“We don’t exactly have a relationship. It would have been different if we did, and…” he paused. “Can I kiss you?”
I bet this would be the wildest response to a cheating confession ever recorded in history.
I stared at his mouth, that hunger was there. He was my mate, the only one the moon goddess had destined for my wolf. This was my fate, and I had to embrace it. I had to prove that this could work.
“Yes… but don’t you hate me?”
“No.”
He would if he knew the whole truth.
“I want to marry you and get to know you.” He yanked me closer with the hand on my chin. “Listen to me, I know you think all of this is a business transaction between your parents and I. In the beginning, the truth is that it was, but now, that’s not the case anymore. I want you, Rachel.”
My heart melted to a puddle.
This was everything I had always wanted to hear. If he had just paid attention to me from the start, I would have never made the questionable life choice to sleep with a stranger despite being engaged. I would have been all in. I still was.
I stood on my tiptoes and kissed my mate deeply. He groaned in my mouth, grabbing my waist and pressing me against him.
My Omega wolf was dormant so I could barely feel her in this moment. Yet it was clear to me that this was right. This was where I belonged. With him.
I forcibly blocked out my thoughts that had begun to derail. I’d never let anyone ruin my only chance at genuine love, especially not his son.
“Our guests are waiting,” Jason smiled against my mouth after a while.
“They must already think this is a disaster.” I turned my head that rested against his, my cheeks heating. “I fell on our cake, can you believe that?”
“Yes, gods, how could you miss that gigantic thing just below the altar? You’re such an embarrassment.”
Jason chuckled, pulling over a wardrobe and fishing through it.
I suddenly felt a knot in my throat, as if I was standing in a fire pit and couldn’t breathe. That wasn’t nice to hear, but maybe he meant it as a joke. I should stop overreacting.
“Try this.”
“Okay.” I forced a smile and awkwardly stood there for a moment.
Of course, I couldn’t change in front of him, or was I supposed to now that we were…
“Are you slow or what?” He chuckled again. “Go change, quickly. I want to show you off.”
I steered in the direction of the bathroom, feeling that knot thicken. Maybe we just had to get to know each other better, and develop solid communication. Our future was unknown, but this was everything I’d always wanted, and I would fight for it no matter what. After changing into the new wedding dress Jason handpicked, I got married to him in the lavish hall downstairs.
I took in the crowd celebrating with us one last time. As long as Malachar Kane stayed far away from me, my life would never fall apart.
