Caleb

276 Words
Caleb Harper wasn’t like the other students at Eastbrook. He wasn’t interested in popularity, and he wasn’t trying to impress anyone. With his worn-out sneakers and oversize hoodie, Caleb looked like he had just stepped off a train from some faraway place. His deep brown eyes seemed to carry stories of a life Lila couldn’t imagine. He spent his lunch periods on the bleachers, reading or drawing in his notebook. Lila first noticed him because he didn’t look at her the way others did. He didn’t laugh when she walked by, and he didn’t stare when she played her flute under the oak tree. One afternoon, after a particularly difficult day when her classmates had whispered about her in the hallways, Lila retreated to her usual spot beneath the oak. She pulled out her ukulele and started to play. As her fingers strummed the familiar tune, she lost herself in the music. It was her escape—her way of finding peace in a world that often felt too loud. What she didn’t expect was Caleb sitting next to her. “I’ve never heard anyone play like that,” he said quietly, startling her. She looked up, slightly embarrassed. “Uh, thanks,” she replied, her cheeks reddening. “I just... play for fun.” “I don’t think it’s just fun,” Caleb said, sitting beside her. “It’s something more. Something real.” Lila wasn’t sure what he meant, but for the first time in a long time, she didn’t feel out of place. Caleb was the first person who seemed to understand that the music wasn’t just noise—it was her voice.
