The Sound of Silence

294 Words
As the weeks went by, something strange started happening. The teasing, which had once been a constant background noise in Lila’s life, started to fade. It wasn’t that the students at Eastbrook High suddenly became more accepting or kinder; it was that Lila had changed. She wasn’t trying to blend in anymore, not the way she used to. She was louder now, in a way that was hard to explain. Her voice, her presence—everything about her felt like it filled the room in a way it never had before. One day, she sat in the school’s courtyard, her ukulele resting on her knee, and began to play a new song. It was soft at first, a gentle melody that seemed to float in the air like the breeze. Her fingers found the strings naturally, as though the song had always been there, waiting for her to play it. It was a song about freedom—about being different and being okay with it. A few students were walking by and paused, hearing the music. Lila didn’t stop playing. She kept going, pouring everything she had into the song, feeling the weight of every note and every word she sang. And slowly, more students gathered around. At first, it was just a few, but by the time she finished, there was a crowd. No one laughed. No one whispered. There was just a quiet stillness, like everyone was listening for the first time. When Lila finished the song, she looked up and saw Caleb standing at the edge of the crowd, his eyes full of admiration. “See?” he said with a small smile. “That’s what I’ve been trying to say.” And for the first time, Lila felt truly seen.
