Chapter 14: The Grand Gesture
Elena POV
The vineyard was still as the sun started to set behind the undulating hills, illuminating the sky with pink and amber tones. As she watched the workers wind up their day, Elena stood close to the property's edge, her arms around herself. In sharp contrast to the raging maelstrom of emotions inside her, the soft rustle of the grapevines in the evening air provided a brief moment of tranquility.
It was evident that Adrian had recently distanced himself, his walls seeming to have been strengthened in response to the threats they had received. She couldn't help but see the flare of something unresolved in his eyes, however.
Behind her, a deep voice said, "Beautiful evening."
