Adrian’s POV
The noise level in the gymnasium was far higher than I had expected. Colorful banners adorned the walls, and the sound of youngsters chatting and chairs clattering filled the room. Other than the fact that Lily was performing, I had no clue what to anticipate from the yearly school talent event.
I tried not to notice that I was the sole parent seated by myself as I moved uneasily on the rough bleacher seat. Some of the other parents had already welcomed me, their eyes darting between Lily and me as if they knew Elena or were acquainted with her. In a space that should have been welcome, I felt alienated and out of place. But I wasn't the focus of this. Gaining her trust was the goal here.
