Chapter 41: Shadows of the Past
Elena’s POV
At first glance, the little leather box in Adrian's study's corner seemed inconspicuous. I was looking for a pen and happened to find it by chance; I wasn't spying. Now, however, when I held the package, I felt an odd tug. The box itself seemed to be alive, pulsing subtly with secrets.
Adrian's study was a haven of order, with the dark wood polished to a mirror-like shine, the desk clear of clutter, and the books arranged with military accuracy. But this box didn't appear to belong. The corners were frayed, the leather was scuffed, and it smelled somewhat of dust and age.
