Chapter 42: Cracks in the Armor Adrian's POV The subtle hum of the fire in the hearth filled the quiet between us as it crackled. With the weight of the reporter's remarks still bearing down on me, I gazed at the flickering flames. Is your mother still alive but hidden somewhere? I had, of course, not responded. Rather, I had packed Elena into the vehicle, kept my head down, and walked away from the mayhem. However, I was unable to flee it any longer amid the silence of the living room. With her hands around a cup of tea that she had not yet touched, Elena sat across from me. Since we got back, she hadn't said much. But there was something deeper in her gaze that I couldn't identify, along with interest and worry. I broke the stillness by stating, "I assume you're looking for answers."
