I'm not usually this violent

Lucy decided to walk a little before taking a cab on Main street. She was so lost in thought that she didn't know when she got to the French Quarter, which was at the heart of the city and not very far from home. But she didn't seem to notice. All she was wondering was why Marj had been so nice and hospitable towards her even though she wasn't expecting anyone? Was she crazy? No. She looked too normal to be crazy and Lucy was a psychologist, she'd be able to tell if someone had those kinds of issues. She took a left turn Marj had seemed very nice, the only downside was the grumpy dude; Simon or Solomon, whatever his name was. He looked like such a bitter person, the turtleneck said it all. Right turn. The street lights of New Orleans had already been turned on and the sound of Al Johnson's Carnival Time could be heard from the jazz players all the way from Bayou Street. Lucy wasn't a fan of jazz but she nonetheless smiled a little to herself. Going to the wrong address was one thing, but going there and still getting the job was just pure luck. Or maybe just grace. She slowed down when she got to one of the street corners. That was when she realized how far she had walked because her shoes were punishing her heels for stressing them so much. She stopped a little to rub her feet a little. f*****g boots. Her sneakers would have been a better choice but Lucy wanted to look professional. Oh well, at least she got the job. She took out her phone and dialed Camille's phone to tell her she was close to home. Lucy wasn't very keen on walking into a living room of two half naked people who just had s*x moments ago. It had happened once before and she swore to herself always to call and give her roommate time to send off her s*x mate it mates before she ot back to the apartment. "Hey girl!" Came Camille's voice from the other end of the line. It was in a higher pitch than normal. That meant two things; either she was drunk, just had s*x or both. "Hey what's up. I'm on my way home, please clear house before I get there alright?" Lucy heard her friend laugh on the other line. "Sure thing Luce. We don't want another Easter incident now" Lucy sighed and hung up. Trying not to remember what happened a few years ago at Easter. Cami was never one for a serious relationship, all she did was work, read tons of books and have casual s*x. A very short list of things to do. "Should you be here all alone, Missy? Maybe we can help you with your heavy purse." A voice came from behind Lucy. She gave a start and turned around immediately. Behind her were two ugly men smiling and coming closer. She could barely make out their faces in the growing darkness. "Stay back!" She commanded, taking a step back. Her eyes darted around for any sign of life closeby. Nothing. They were close to Lafayette cemetery. So it was literally a graveyard. f**k. "We don't mean no trouble, dear." The shorter of the two said, coming closer to reveal a badly shaven hair and bloodshot eyes. Before she could say anything he dashed towards her direction and made to grab her handbag. Lucy was caught off guard but moved in the other direction quickly enough to dodge the short thief's efforts towards her bag. "Ah you like to play eh? You see that Bob." Shorty said and let out a dry, shrill laughter and moved towards Lucy. "Yeah, Pollo." Bob replied, smiling stupidly. "You know, that's really not a way to treat a lady, sir." A new voice said as a figure emerged from the shadows. A tall, handsome man with long hair tied in a little ponytail. His blue eyes shimmered slightly even though it was almost dark. He was smiling. Lucy wondered why. "Who the f**k is this?" The second thief, who was called Bob, shrieked and turned to face the new presence. "Look here buddy, why don't you just run along now before you get into trouble with me." Pollo sneered and pulled out a knife. "Now, now there's no need for this, why don't we leave this lady alone and settle this like gentlemen, I'm sure we could—" The stranger barely finished before Pollo swiped the knife toward his face. The man dodged it swiftly and caught Pollo by the hand. The thief struggled to break free but couldn't. "What the s**t?" Pollo cursed as the knife fell off his hand. He tried to fight with his free hand but the stranger caught it and immediately landed a punch on his face. Lucy watched as the shorter man gave a little grunt and fell to the ground. "I'm not usually this violent." The man said to the now unconscious Pollo on the floor. "Arrrgh." Bob screamed and hit the man hard on the face, grabbed Lucy's bag and ran. "Oh dear." The guy said, picked up a rock and threw it at Bob. The thief yelped and fell over. "Just hand the bag over and I'll forgive you for punching me." The man in the ponytail said as he walked towards the thief on the floor. "f**k you!" Bob screamed and swung a fist towards the man, but this time he was ready. He skillfully caught the thief's hand and punched him right in the face, retrieved the bag and handed it to a very surprised Lucy. "Sorry you had to see that." He smiled, rubbing his chin from the after effects of the earlier blow to his face. "I… I thought this only happened in movies." Lucy said, finally finding her voice. "That was…" "Dangerous, impulsive, not very smart." He smiled wryly, still rubbing his face. And also, for the first time that evening, Lucy noticed he had a British accent. "I was actually going to say brave. That was a very brave thing you did back there. Thank you. I'm Lucy, by the way." She said, and extended her hand towards him. "Nice to meet you, Lucy. Even though I had to take a punch first." He smiled. "I'm August. Have we met before?" He asked as he shook her hand softly. "Hmm. I don't think so. Nice name though, August isn't very common in New Orleans. Quite unusual." "Well, I'm not your regular, boring dude now, am I?" He smiled. Lucy laughed. "Fair enough." She said and broke away from the handshake. She turned around to see the two muggers lying unconscious on the Lafayette grounds as the roads grew darker and darker. August had knocked them out with just a punch. Impressive. "I think this is the part when you call the police." August said sarcastically. "It's already evening, the cops will meet them here soon enough." Lucy shrugged and started walking towards Bourbon street. "Are you sure we haven't met before?" August asked again, squeezing his face as if to remember, showing off his dimples. Lucy laughed, "Like I said before, nope." "What's so funny?" "Nothing. It's just obvious." Lucy shrugged. "What is?" "Well, this is obviously how most men normally start conversations, especially with women. You tell them they look like you've met before and when they reply yes or maybe you will continue the conversations from there." August stared at her for a moment then smiled. "You see. To know a lot about conversations, Lucy. You're not psychic or anything are you?" He said and they both laughed. "Alright you got me. Maybe I have used that technique before. But let me at least buy you a drink." He said as they approached The Bulldog pub. Lucy's phone made a sound just as she was about to respond. She opened her purse and saw it was a message from Cami. All clear :) "Maybe some other time." Lucy smiled apologetically at August. "It's alright." He nodded. "Just try to get mugged more often alright? You never know where I'll be." Lucy laughed loudly, "I'll keep that in mind. Have a nice night. She said as she flagged down a cab heading to Bourbon. "Just get a boyfriend already, how long do you intend to continue this casual… relationship stuff?" Lucy asked as Camille brushed her teeth by the sink. "Who was it back there anyway? Charlie or Greg? Camille spit out toothpaste, "It was Andy… No, André. But my boring s*x life isn't important, tell me about this August man." The brunette smiled. "He offered to buy me a drink." Camille gasped, "First he literally saves your life then this. How romantic." Lucy scoffed. "I turned him down. Sadly. I was too tired and it was pretty late. I didn't even realize how long I walked till we got to Bulldog pub." "Bulldog isn't so far from Lafayette. Why were you so tired?" Cami asked, opening her laptop and turning it on. Lucy took off her trousers, "I was at Lincoln Estate all afternoon. I took your advice. I checked that wacky website and got booked for an interview." Cami closed the laptop so quickly Lucy thought the screen might have cracked. "Why didn't you say anything before? You went all the way to Garden District? How was it? Are they rich? Did you get the job? Tell me all about it." Cami beamed like a happy school girl. Her friend was finally trying new things. "It's a long story Cami and I'm really tired but yeah I got the job as a maid in a cottage at Lincoln. The owner of the house is a mean guy with a British accent, always frowning." Lucy said as she changed into a pink bathing robe. "Family members or anything?" "Nah. He's not married. There wasn't any sign of a couple there." "Hmm. Sounds dry." "Yeah. But there's hope. The housekeeper's nice. I think she likes me. She introduced herself as Marj." "Marj. Like Marjorie?" "Yes." Cami yawned. "What about the man of the house?" "I think it was Simon or Solomon, something like that but he had a strange last name though; Hemming." A pause. "I'm gonna take a quick shower. I start tomorrow, I'll be staying there but I'll come back on weekends." Lucy said and disappeared into the bathroom. "Wait. What did you—" "I'll still pay my part of the rent, Cami. Don't worry." Lucy bellowed over the sounds of water pouring. "Can you hand me the towel on the bed?" No response. "Cami?" Lucy called and turned off the shower. There was still no answer so she peeked through the door. Camille wasn't in the room. After drying her body and changing to pajamas, Lucy saw the note on the bed "Be back soon, if not I'll see you in the morning. Duty calls." Classic Cami to leave without warning when she was in the shower. Lucy sighed, locked up and got into bed.
