Chapter 1

Helen's POV The pounding on the door was nearly deafening. "Helen he's back again..." groaned my mother. "I'm sorry," I responded as I went into the kitchen. "I don't know how to be any clearer." "I know, but maybe you could just accept him as your mate. He is the Alpha after all," she suggested, but we both knew I wouldn't. I wanted my true mate. He had to be out there somewhere. "I'll go get the door," I said with a sigh. "No, I'll talk with the young Alpha," my father grunted as he lifted himself off of the lazy-boy chair. He strode over to the door and opened it. "Greetings young Alpha." I stood nearby, eavesdropping. "How can I help you?" "I've come to see Helen," he responded calmly, but I could hear the tension in his tone. He wasn't happy that my father had answered the door. "She is currently busy," my father responded. "I know she isn't," he gritted back, trying hard to keep his temper in check. He had been sweet when we were younger. However, the closer we came to our eighteenth birthdays the more aggressive he's become. He continues to make his desires known that even if we are not fated mates we must be together. However, I do not share the same sentiment. I want to be with my fated mate or at the very least give myself time to find him. But James doesn’t want to wait. He’s impatient that way. “I’m sorry James, but she truly is preoccupied,” my father pressed. I could hear his temper beginning to rise as he did his best to remain in control because no matter how aggressive or irritating James was, he was still the future Alpha of our pack. I heard James let out a huff before he responded. “Tell her to call me when she is not busy,” he ordered and I knew my father would tell me because even though James of not the Alpha now, his commands still pulled some weight. However, it didn’t mean I had to call him. “Yes, young Alpha,” my father said calmly. The door closed and my father came around the corner to see me standing there. “You could have at least been farther away,” he said with a sigh. There is no doubt that he could smell you from this short distance. “I’m sorry,” I told him. I could see his pained expression. He wanted to protect me, but there was only so much he could do. “It’s not your fault, sweetheart,” he said as he patted me on the shoulder. “It feels like it,” I muttered. “Hold your head up high. You have no reason to be embarrassed or feel guilty. I will always be on your side,” he comforted me. “Thank you, Dad,” I said as I looked up at him. He pulled me into a warm hug. “Daddy will always be here,” he told me. “Okay, I haven’t called you daddy since I was seven,” I grumbled as I tried to push away from him, but he wouldn’t release me from his grip. “Honey, let her go.” Mom stepped in to make him stop. “Fine,” he huffed dramatically and released me. “Now, both of you, lunch is ready,” she said as she turned back and went into the kitchen to start putting food on her plate. I followed her and did the same. We all sat around the dinner table beginning our meal. “Where is Diane?” I asked as I shovelled food into my mouth. “She had a group assignment due on Monday and said she would be working on it with her group today,” Mom responded. “Oh,” I sighed. I hadn't seen her much recently. It felt like there was something more going on than just schoolwork. We continued to eat our meal, making small talk. Soon the meal was finished, we cleaned up, and then I went to my room. I sat down at my desk and started to work on my schoolwork. Mom always said that we should get our homework done on Friday night then we could have a more relaxing weekend. We listened, most of the time. I sat for only a few minutes before my mind drifted and I picked up my phone. I turned it on to see that James had sent about ten new messages. I pulled down the top bar to see what the latest message said without actually clicking on it. He would know that I saw it then. I have her. I read the message. I nearly dropped my phone. Who? Who is she? Diane? Quickly, I clicked on the message and there I saw a picture of my sister zip tied to a chair. She didn’t appear stressed, but rather unimpressed. Diane was strong. James would have had to use his full strength to capture her. I knew he was beginning to lose his marbles, but I didn’t think he would go this far. I stood up and left my room and went straight to Dad. “Dad, we have a problem,” I told him as I showed him the message that James had sent me. I watched as his expression reddened and soon Mom was standing next to him. She wasn’t scared. She was enraged. They both were. “We will speak with the Alpha immediately,” Dad announced as he stood from his chair and walked to the front door. Mom and I followed him. We loaded into the car and drove to the packhouse. Soon we were standing in front of the Alpha’s door, waiting for him to allow us entrance. “Come in,” he called to us. Dad pushed the door open and went inside. “Have a seat,” he instructed. We did as he said and then waited for him to permit us to speak. He was a good Alpha. Stricked, but fair. “What brings you in Davis?” he questioned my dad. Alpha and Dad had a good relationship. In this pack, we were blessed with two Beta families. We were one of them, but we were not the Beta’s for the pack. We simply held the genetics. Dad took a minute to explain what had been happening and then showed him the text messages. I had wanted to deal with it ourselves, but James had now gone too far. “I see. I will take care of it,” Alpha told us, his expression was dark. “Thank you, Alpha,” Dad said with a bow. “Your daughter will be returned to you shortly,” he promised. We all bowed and then left the room. Just as I was leaving he called my name. “Helen.” “Yes, Alpha?” I asked as I turned back to face him. “My son seems to be very attached to you,” he spoke. It sounded as though he was talking more to himself than to me. When he didn’t continue, I responded, “Yes.” “And your feelings?” “He is a good friend, but I am not sure if he is my mate. So, I want to wait until my eighteenth birthday,” I told him honestly. “I assume you have relayed this to my son as well.” I nodded. “I see, then I will speak with him further on the matter.” “Thank you so much,” I said with a smile and then bowed to him before leaving the room. Everything was going to be okay. The Alpha would talk to James and bring him back to his senses.
