Forty-OneIsabella’s spine tingled in anticipation of the scorcher of a day that was coming. It was barely six in the morning and already the air had that electric feeling of late summer heat. She shifted contentedly in her saddle, glad to be breathing in the puffs of fresh breeze after a night spent tossing and turning, worrying about Sebastian. Had he managed to talk Edmund down? Was he safely back home? She’d slipped out early while Huldah was still sleeping and collected a mare from the Excelsior Stables and headed out of town on the Nevada City road, rejoicing again in the yeasty, horsey aroma.
