Chapter 20 Rayna I noticed them because they were blocking the sidewalk. We’d just cleared a late call—nothing dramatic, just a drunk kid who’d fallen off a scooter—and Tess had peeled off toward the bar on the corner, promising to text me if anything “fun” happened. I was walking the last few blocks to my apartment, half on autopilot, bag strap digging into my shoulder, when the couple came into view. They were standing under the awning of the bakery that always smelled like sugar and yeast. The place was closed, lights off, street pretty empty. The guy had his hands on the woman’s waist.
