CHAPTER FIFTEEN I set my mental clock to beat the alarm, and as I c**k one eye open I can see that the hands say 4:00 AM. I slide out of bed as quietly as possible, so as not to wake Blondie, grab my razor and shaving cream out of our bathroom, then go to the kids bathroom to shower and shave. The way they sleep, you could fire off a bomb and they would never hear it. I manage to get back to our room and get dressed. I'm very quiet going down the stairs. In the kitchen, I find the coffee, and get our percolator started so that Blondie will wake up to the smell of good dark coffee brewing. I let myself out the side door, get the engine started, and slowly roll my car out into the street. Everything is silent. The first light of dawn is just breaking over the mountains as I head south.
