CHAPTER SIXTY-ONE
A big murder case takes over the headlines and the front pages for a week, maybe two, then if the killer or killers are not captured right away, it fades to page three or page six. After that it moves to the second section and at last fades away. When the killer or killers are captured the whole process begins again.
Behind the scenes, the attorneys for the state and the attorneys for the defense are working fourteen or fifteen hours, seven days a week. Very few stories are placed about what is going on as they prepare for trial. There were a couple of days when it was indicated that Mason's attorneys would go for an insanity defense.
