CHAPTER THIRTY-EIGHT Domingo Bermudez meets me on the far side of South Mountain by the old corral where the road forks. I leave the patrol car and walk with Domingo to where some of his sheep are waiting. Then we proceed along a hardly discernible path for about three hundred yards. He stops and points. Sure enough, there, face down in an arroyo, are the decomposing bodies of two men. We're careful not to touch anything close to the crime scene and walk back down to where I left the black and white. The first arrival is Detective Steinberg. He brings a uniformed officer with him to take my "borrowed" car back to headquarters. It is evident that the method of transportation I had selected is already history and Lou, being the thoughtful and caring guy he is, wants to minimize the damage
