When I arrived at the fenced-in pool area, it was empty. I let myself in the gate, set my towel on the foot of a nearby chaise, and took off my cover up. Draping that over the foot of the chair too, I stepped down the first few steps at the shallow end of the pool before I dove forward and swam across the pool. When I reached the deep end, I moved to one side and started swimming back and forth across the deeper water. I didn’t pay attention to what was going on outside the pool as I swam from one side to the other and flipped over before making the return trip, slowly counting in my head each trip.
