Chapter 6 A Fresh Start

Lyra As soon as I arrived back at my sister’s place, seeing me drenched in the rain, she hurriedly brought a towel for me. “Where have you been? You’re going to catch a cold at this rate!” she exclaimed while helping me wipe my hair. I helplessly looked at her. “I’m not a kid, you know. Besides, I’ve already applied for a job.” Mira paused for a moment before looking at me with guilt. “I’m sorry…” I chuckled and patted her shoulder. “Don’t be. If anything, I should be the one who says sorry for troubling you both.” Seeing that she was down by it, I hurriedly changed the topic. “I’ll take a bath now.” Mira nodded her head. “Come and eat later. I cooked your favorite food.” The corner of my lips raised, nodding my head and looked at her gratefully before I went to the bathroom. After I finished taking a bath, I went downstairs and saw Mira, who was pacing back and forth. I was about to ask her what’s wrong, when upon seeing me, her eyes lit up and hurriedly handed her phone to me. I looked at her in confusion and before I could ask, a formal and polite tone came from the phone. “Hello, is this Lyra Vale?” I looked at Mira who was looking at me with bright eyes and answered the person in the call. “Yes, this is Lyra Vale. Is there something I can help you with?” “We have request your application earlier and our boss have decided to accept you as his personal assistant. You may start tomorrow—six o’clock sharp. See you tomorrow, Ms. Vale.” It was Mr. Zane’s secretary speaking. Flood of relief washed over me upon hearing this confirmation. Although I applied out of whim and wasn’t sure if I would get accepted—knowing that for a big company like them there should be a lot of applicants who applied for the position, not just me. “Hello? Are you still there?” I blinked, snapping back to reality. “Yes–yes, I’m still here! Thank you so much for this opportunity!” After the call ended, Mira and I looked at each other before we both cheered. ~ Early in the morning, I already left Mira’s apartment and wore a neat formal clothes that I borrowed from Mira. I walked inside the Howl Entertainment’s building and saw the same receptionist who handed me the fill-out form yesterday. “Are you here for an interview?” She asked with a polite smile. I smiled back before shaking my head. “I got accepted yesterday. This is my first day of work.” Her eyes widened in surprise but she quickly composed herself and gave a smile. “Congratulations. Mr. Zane’s assistant, right?” I nodded my head. “Yes.” She tapped a code into her desk before looking up. “Top floor. Elevator D.” “Thank you.” I followed her instructions and found the elevator. My heart thundered at every floor, watching the numbers go up until the doors finally opened. The top floor was different—it has wide glass windows showing the city’s skyline, and I could feel the auras vibrated through the air. Every instinct of me reognized it. Alpha territory. I took a deep breath before walking inside. It happened that as soon as I stepped in, a tall man was already waiting for me outside. When our eyes meet, he glance down at his wrist before looking up again. “Lyra Vale?” I nodded my head. “Yes.” “You’re early,” he said. I smiled politely. “I prefer that to being late.” “Good.” He nodded in satisfaction and gestured toward the frosted glass doors. “Alpha Zane will see you.” When I stepped my foot inside, I could hear the loud thump of my heart that I couldn’t suppressed. I gulped down my nervous and couldn’t help but look around inside. The office was nothing like Kyle’s study—no piled of messed documents nor the sent of musk. Just a minimalist style of study that feels comfortable to look at. I couldn’t help but glance at Zane stood by the window with his back to me, and a cup of black coffee in his hand. I was about to greet him when he suddenly spoke without turning. “Miss Vale. You’re late.” I paused and couldn’t help but look at the time. It was six five in the morning. “The elevator stopped on every floor,” I blinked. “Excuses for omegas,” I heard him muttered. I sighed in relief, ignoring the sarcasm and mockery in his tone. “Thank goodness I’m not one.” He turned then—his gray eyes locked onto me and his expression was hard for me to read. There was something wolfish about the curve of his mouth and I couldn’t tell what exactly. “Interesting.” He set the cup down. “Do you know what I expect from my assistant?” I looked at him in the eyes before I answered. “To keep up.” His brows lifted slightly. “And can you?” I met his gaze on. “We’ll find out.” I saw the corner of his lips raised as his eyes squinted, looking at me as if I were his prey. “I like people who can keep up with me and who don’t tremble when I breathe near them either.” My pulsed almost jumped, but I held still, not looking away at him. I thought he would stand up and test it if I would tremble near him when he suddenly tossed a small silver badge across the desk which I caught by reflex. “You’ll accompany me to the Lunar Crest Banquet tonight,” he said. “Council representatives, pack Alphas, and investors would be there. You’ll take notes, handle the introductions, and keep quiet unless spoken to. Do you think you can handle the job?” “Tonight?” I asked. “Problem?” I hurriedly shook my head. “No.” “Good. I expect much from you.” He leaned back against the edge of his desk with his arms folded. “Wear something appropriate. You represent Silvercrest now.” Now the problem is that I don’t have money for it and I’m embarrassed to borrow from my sister knowing that her money is usually being managed by her husband. “Answer?” I looked at him with troubled expression. “C-Can I have an advance pay to buy clothes for later, Mr. Zane?” He paused—as if not expecting my words. I thought that he won’t agree nor might fire me at this point for asking an advance pay just right at the start of the work but he took out his check and wrote it before handing it to me. “It’s a bonus pay. You’ll receive more if you do well.” I swallowed hard and accept it. “Thank you, Mr. Zane.” His gaze lingered a second longer, then he waved me off. “Dismissed.” At the evening before our agreed time with Alpha Zane, I stood before the cracked mirror in my sister’s small apartment, smoothing down a the cut off shoulder evening black dress that hugged my waist. Out of all dresses I found, this one caught my eye—plain and formal. “Are you sure that you’re not being sold off?” Mira asked from the doorway that made me chuckle. “It’s just work.” Her worry deepened. “If Moonfang finds out—” “I’ve already cut off my ties with him. What will happen to me is not his to responsibility.” I calmly answered. I saw her took a heavy sigh. “Make sure to process the bond severance early on.” I didn’t answer. Instead, I sprayed a last touch of suppressant on my pulse points before I hugged her and left despite of her worries. As soon as I got out of the apartment, I saw a luxury car waiting at the curb. I wasn’t surprise at how he found my address after all, I put it in the filled-out form when I applied for the position. His driver—a beta named Silas—opened the door wordlessly in the backseat and I happen to see Zane who was sitting inside, dressed in black suit with silver cufflinks glinting. “You dress well,” he said as his eyes flicking briefly over my dress. “All thanks to the money you gave, Sir.” I answered honestly, making him chuckled. I sat next to him as Silas already closed the door and started the engine. He handed me a sleek tablet. “Memorize the guest list before we arrive. Names, packs, alliances, make sure you won’t misaddress an Alpha.” I nodded, scrolling to the tablet silently. Then his voice cut through. “You’ve worked for an Alpha before.” It wasn’t a question. My throat tightened. “Yes.” “Which pack?” I forced my eyes to stay on the tablet. “Moonfang.” The silence that followed was so thick that it made me restless. Finally, he spoke. “Lyra? Interesting.” I doubt if he knew the rumors about me.
