“I’m sorry you had to go through that by yourself. I can feel your pain and emptiness,” said the soft voice.
What the f**k! s**t, it forgot about that voice. I thought jumping, for the second time.
“I am not just a voice!” Cece snapped angrily.
Ooh, the kitty has claws. I chuckled. Well Cece, do you know how long we are going to just lay here, wherever we are?
“No, I’m sorry, I don’t have any idea how long. I sense some of the ingredients that made up the poison, primarily wolfsbane, but I don’t know enough about the other ones to determine how much longer we will have.”
I hope someone took our blood. It would be nice to replicate the paralytic they used for use later. It would be a great addition to my torture bag.
What is wolfsbane? I asked.
“Wolfsbane is a plant that weakens most shifters. It also weakens their animals so they can’t talk to their human half. It doesn’t affect us because of the type of animal we are and, no, it is not time for you to know yet.”
Curiosity got the best of me. So, have you always been here? I might as well learn what I can about you. I realized I was starting to believe in this madness.
“Yes, I was always here, but I could never talk or interact with you.”
Okay… how does that work? How did you know we were a dormant when I didn’t?
“How did you know you were a human when you were born? I know what I am the same way you know what you are. I just couldn’t talk to you about it. Think of it like I’m just along for a ride; and no, you can’t get rid of me.” Then, with a teasing growl to her voice, she said, “you’re stuck with me, baby.”
Ok, simmer down their tiger. We both chuckled.
Can you tell me about wolf shifters? I am pretty sure they are what attacked me, since they seemed too intelligent for wild animals. Do they live in communities or live alone? How does their society work? Also, why did they attack me? I was about to leave.
“Sure, wolf shifters are similar to wild wolves. They live in packs, and there is an Alpha who runs the pack. His mate becomes Luna. Beta is the second in command. They take care of the pack when the Alpha is away. Delta is third in command. They look after the rest of the pack members and report issues to the Alpha. Lastly, the Gamma is the best warrior of a pack. They protect the Luna, when she is away from the pack. When she is inside the pack, they oversee training and patrols. Everyone else is either a warrior or just a pack member. Omegas are the weakest members, and they run the upkeep of the pack house.”
What is in the pack house? Now I am getting curious to know all about the supernatural world.
“The pack house is usually the biggest house on pack lands. The Alpha, Beta and their families live in the pack house along with their offices and a large gathering area.”
What is the Luna responsible for?
“The Luna oversees the pack house, prepares for and takes care of any guests that arrive. They also work with the women and children of the pack. They are supposed to be the caregivers and can be the protector when needed.”
Is that what Amelia is? Also, what do you mean 'supposed to be'?
“Yes, Amelia is the current Luna. The Luna is like a mother to all. They love, guide, and protect all the pack members. However, there have been Lunas that just want the position to abuse their power. You would make an amazing Luna.”
That shocked the s**t out of me. I am not a mother, protector, family material. I work and live alone. I don’t want to be responsible for anyone ever again.
“You are a protector and you have a good heart. Even though you have killed people, they were truly bad people. You do your research to make sure you don’t hurt the innocent, and you make sure they are out of harm’s way before taking action. You don’t base whether someone is good or bad off your own opinion, you base it on what they have done, the facts. You stand up for the little guys who can’t stand up for themselves.”
I was lost in thought. It was a lot to process, and it was starting to wear me out. This poison is no joke.
“I can feel you’re tired, get some rest.”
Fine, but not because you told me to.
“Of course.” The last thing I heard while drifting off was her soft chuckle.
I woke up to voices outside our room before they opened the door.
“Carl, will you carry our guest to the Alpha’s shared chambers? Anastasia is insisting on taking this room since this is the only available room. The Alpha’s won’t be back for a couple more days. Thankfully, the youth gathering will be over so Anastasia will have to move to the guest rooms so we can move our guest back here before the Alphas get home,” Luna Amelia commanded.
She seemed irritated, making me wonder who this Anastasia is to make our nice, calm Luna irritated. Thankfully, Cece told me what a Luna was, so now, everything makes sense.
“Anna,” she continued, “please gather all her things and place them on the couch in the Alpha’s shared chambers.”
I heard someone coming closer and gently lifting me into their arms.
Carl smelled like disinfectant and hospital.
I tried to follow the path that he took us in case I needed to get back to this room. Carl took a right once we left the room, and I noticed that the hallway was a bit cooler.
We didn’t go far at all. We went about 20 steps, then Carl opened a door down the hall before he entered.
The first thing I noticed was the scent of the room. It smelled so good and warm, safe…home.
I could smell hints of cinnamon, freshly cut grass, the smell of rain, and a woodsy scent. Such a weird mixture but all my favorite smells.
The second thing I noticed was I could feel Cece… squirming?
Cece, is everything okay? I asked her. Normally she’s calm and still, so this is weird behavior.
“I think so, these scents, they seem familiar, and… like… home. It doesn’t make sense. I don’t know why and can’t explain it but feel like these scents are important. Things are about to change in our lives.” That was all she said.
I have had enough change to last me a lifetime. So, no thank you. I told her.
The further Carl carried me into the room, the stronger the scents became. He finally laid me on a new bed. It was so much softer than the last one and felt somehow bigger. Not sure how I could feel that, but I did.
Then I heard more shuffling which I assumed was Anna with my things and Luna Amelia following.
“Thank you, Carl and Anna, let’s let our guest rest and prepare the other room for Anastaisa,” said Luna Amelia.
There was some more shuffling of things being sat down. Then they walked out the door and closed it.
Any update on the poison healing?
“I can feel it starting to wear off. Being in this room helps, somehow. There is still enough to prevent me from healing us, but it’s almost weak enough I can start healing us the rest of the way tomorrow.”
Well, that’s good.
We talked for a while before I drifted off to sleep.
