The news broke at seven in the morning.
Marcus had warned me it was coming. The DA's office had confirmed the charges publicly the night before and by morning every financial desk in the country had the story. Richard Cole, founder of Cole Industries, formally charged with attempted murder, fraud, and criminal conspiracy. The Cole empire's stock dropped eleven percent before the market had been open an hour.
Marcus sat across from me with his laptop open and his phone face-down on the table, which meant it had been ringing too consistently to deal with individually.
"The board wants an emergency meeting," he said.
"Schedule it for next week."
"They want it today."
"I'm in a hospital cardiac ward four days post-surgery." I looked at him. "Next week."
He typed something.
