The First Shot

940 Words
The hallway held its breath. Guns raised. Safety clicks echoing. Thirty feet of polished marble turned into a battlefield waiting to happen. Amanda stood in the center of it all. Marcus on one side. Victor and his men on the other. Ben just ahead of her—tense, ready. “Wrong answer,” Marcus had said. Amanda didn’t flinch. “Then make me move,” she replied. The words were quiet. But they hit. Marcus’s eyes narrowed. “You’ve changed.” Amanda’s lips curved faintly. “I had a good teacher.” Her gaze flickered—just briefly—toward Ben. He didn’t react. But she felt the shift in him. Marcus chuckled. “Bold.” He lifted his hand slightly. Stone soldiers adjusted their aim. “Last chance,” Marcus said. “Come with me, or this ends badly.” Amanda’s heart pounded. But her voice stayed steady. “It already has.” Silence. A single second— Then everything shattered. A gunshot rang out. Not from Marcus’s side. Not from Victor’s. From Amanda. The recoil shot through her arm as the sound exploded down the hallway. The bullet struck the chandelier above— Glass rained down like a storm. Everyone flinched. And in that split second— Amanda moved. “NOW!” she shouted. Ben reacted instantly. He grabbed her, pulling her down as gunfire erupted from both sides. Victor’s men fired. Stone soldiers returned it. The hallway turned into chaos. Bullets tore into walls. Smoke filled the air. Shouting. Screaming. Amanda’s ears rang, but her mind was sharp. She hadn’t aimed to kill. She aimed to break control. And it worked. Ben pulled her toward a side corridor. “Move!” Victor followed, his men covering their retreat. Marcus’s voice roared behind them. “DON’T LET THEM GET AWAY!” Amanda’s pulse raced as they ran. Her ankle screamed from the earlier injury, but she ignored it. Pain didn’t matter. Not now. They turned another corner— More guards rushed past them. Gunfire echoed closer. “They’re everywhere,” Amanda said breathlessly. Victor didn’t slow. “Of course they are.” Amanda shot him a look. “You knew this would happen!” Victor’s voice stayed calm. “I expected resistance.” “This isn’t resistance—this is a takeover!” Victor didn’t deny it. Ben glanced back. “They’re closing in.” Another explosion rocked the corridor behind them. The lights flickered again. Amanda’s heart pounded faster. “How is my father doing all this?” she demanded. Victor answered this time. “He’s not.” Amanda frowned. “What?” Victor’s voice dropped. “Adrian Stone doesn’t send messages like this.” Amanda’s stomach twisted. “Then who—?” Before she could finish— They turned into a large open chamber. And froze. More men stood waiting. Not Stone. Not Chain. Different. Black tactical gear. No insignia. No markings. Amanda’s blood ran cold. “Who are they…?” One of the men stepped forward slowly. Calm. Too calm. “Well,” he said, voice smooth, unfamiliar. “This is unexpected.” Victor’s expression darkened for the first time. “You.” Ben went completely still. Amanda felt it instantly. That shift again. Bigger this time. More dangerous. “Do you know him?” she whispered. Ben didn’t answer. The man smiled faintly. “Of course he does.” Amanda’s heart started racing. “What is going on?” The man’s gaze locked onto Ben. “Tell her.” Silence. Amanda turned sharply. “Ben—” “Not now,” he said. The man chuckled. “Still protecting her?” Amanda’s chest tightened. “From what?!” The man took another step forward. “From the truth.” Victor stepped in front slightly. “You shouldn’t be here.” The man raised an eyebrow. “And yet I am.” Amanda’s head spun. Nothing made sense anymore. “Someone needs to explain what’s happening!” No one answered. Until— The man spoke again. And this time… His eyes were on Amanda. “You think this war is between two families?” Amanda froze. Her breath caught. “What do you mean?” The man’s smile deepened. “That’s cute.” A pause. A truth far bigger than anything before. “It never was.” Amanda’s heart slammed against her chest. “What…?” Victor’s voice turned sharp. “Enough.” But the man ignored him. His gaze flickered to Ben again. Then back to Amanda. “Ask him.” Silence. Heavy. Crushing. Amanda slowly turned toward Ben. Her voice barely came out. “…What is he talking about?” Ben didn’t speak. And that silence— It was louder than anything. Amanda felt something inside her snap. “ANSWER ME!” The man chuckled again. “You still don’t see it?” Amanda’s pulse roared. “See what?!” The man’s eyes gleamed. “Your lover…” A pause. A final strike. “…doesn’t belong to either side.” Amanda’s world tilted. Her breath stopped. “What…?” The man’s smile widened. “He doesn’t work for Victor.” Amanda turned sharply toward Ben. “No…” Her voice trembled. “That’s not true.” But the man wasn’t done. “He doesn’t work for your father either.” Amanda’s heart pounded violently. Then— The final blow. “He works for something much bigger.” Silence fell like a hammer. Amanda stared at Ben. Her entire world hanging on his next words. And slowly… He spoke. Quiet. Cold. Unavoidable. “He’s right.” Amanda felt the ground disappear beneath her.
