"We mean no disrespect," Saleem said, holding his hands up in a gesture of peace. "We're just… lost. We stumbled upon this tower by accident."
The figure chuckled, a dry, rattling sound. "Lost, are you? Lost in time, perhaps?"
Nova gasped. "How did you know?"
The figure lowered his hood, revealing a wizened face with piercing blue eyes that seemed to shimmer with an inner light. "I know many things, young ones. I am Malkor, guardian of this forest and keeper of ancient knowledge."
He gestured towards a pair of worn armchairs near a crackling fireplace. "Come, sit. Tell me your tale."
Saleem and Nova hesitantly obeyed. They recounted their accidental journey through time, their arrival in this strange and magical world, and their encounter with the warring knights and goblins.
Malkor listened intently, his expression unreadable. When they finished, he nodded slowly. "Your story is… intriguing. It seems you have been caught in the crossfire of an ancient conflict between the forces of light and darkness."
"Can you help us?" Nova pleaded. "We need to find our friends and get back to our own time."
Malkor stroked his beard thoughtfully. "The path back to your time is uncertain, young ones. But perhaps… perhaps I can assist you in finding your friends."
He raised his staff, and a swirling vortex of energy appeared above it. Images flickered within the vortex – a bustling city, a sterile room, Alex and Elena looking frightened and confused.
"They are here," Malkor said, pointing the staff towards the north. "Beyond the Darkwood, in the city of Aetherium."
Saleem and Nova felt a surge of hope. They had a destination, a direction to follow. But Malkor's next words brought them crashing back to reality.
"The Darkwood is a perilous place," he warned. "It is home to creatures of darkness, and the path is fraught with danger. You will need courage, strength, and… a touch of magic."
He reached into the folds of his robe and produced two small, intricately carved wooden amulets. He handed one to each of them.
"These amulets will offer you some protection," Malkor explained. "They will help you harness the magic within this world. But be warned, magic is a double-edged sword. It can be a source of great power, but it can also corrupt and destroy."
Saleem and Nova clutched the amulets tightly. They knew they were embarking on a dangerous journey, but the thought of reuniting with their friends spurred them on. They thanked Malkor for his guidance and stepped out of the tower, ready to face whatever challenges awaited them in the Darkwood.
