Upon saying what she wanted to say and seeing that she was successful in ruining my mood and making the joy I had at being stood up for a turn to sadness, Sophie made another sign at her minions and they all filed out of the room.
This time, no one was hailing them or talking to her. Everyone avoided colliding with her and they kept to themselves as she moved across the room. At the door, Sophie paused and turned around to look at me.
"Remember what I told you? I will be back and I will make sure to pay you back for today's humiliation. Don't be too confident and always watch your back."
She hissed and got out of the room. Every other person who had gathered to watch the show also began to leave the room one after the other. They took with them the news of Nathan's being mate with Lena. It was a matter of time before the whole pack would be informed.
I had almost forgotten about them while being lost in the thoughts of Sophie's threats and declarations. Although I wanted to be happy about my luck with the Alphas, something kept nagging within me.
The same thing echoed what Sophie had said earlier. That I would be rejected by the Alphas. For a moment, I looked out of the room through the window and saw Lena and Nathan returning. They were holding hands and looked so happy together.
That was also the same thing I wished for and also wanted. I became envious of Lena and wished I was in her place. I caught myself in time and wondered why I had to do that.
Tears immediately came to my eyes as I thought of what I almost wished for my best friend. Collecting myself, I began to make my way toward my room to swim in the river of my heartbroken and frustrating tears when someone called out my name.
"Amber! Amber, wait!" I heard Lena call out. I would recognize her voice anytime and any day. I stopped and quickly heaved in a deep breath to collect myself before turning to face her and her mate.
I quickly raised my hand and took a quick swipe at the tears which were brimming on the surface and threatening to fall. Once I was sure that my face wouldn't betray any emotions, I turned and faced her, smiling.
I could see that the room was empty. Everyone seems to have found something else which captured their interest and wouldn't bother to watch a pathetic girl like me cry.
"Oh, girl! I'm so happy for you. Now I feel less bad for you. I'm happy you're fulfilling your dreams and that's enough consolation for me." I told her as I quickly ran to her and threw my hands around her.
I did this to dispel any negative thoughts I might have towards her. I wasn't supposed to wish that she was in my shoes. I couldn't so it was best that I killed all of those thoughts and I was successful in doing that since I was genuinely happy for her.
I could see Nathan waiting on the sides and soon, we disengaged from our hug. Lena held me at arm's length and was scanning my face. She furrowed her brows as she began to speak to me.
"What do you mean by feeling bad for me? What's going on? Why do you think so?" She asked me rapidly in quick succession.
"I feel bad for you because, for some time, I felt like you weren't able to get a mate because of your association with me.
After the coming-of-age ceremony, I didn't see you so I thought maybe you weren't able to get a mate. When you finally told me you had a mate, I never expected it to be the gamma.
I don't know how I would feel if your mate turned out to be a fellow Omega or one who didn't have enough power to protect you. Most of all, I had feared that you would also face the same thing I faced with the Alphas."
I told her with tears swimming in my eyes and holding her face affectionately. Lena was moved. That was her nature. She got easily moved by the little things.
She drew me into another comforting hug and I allowed myself to be comforted. I needed comfort. She patted my back like she would do to a baby and we disengaged when she noticed Nathan was checking the watch on his wrist.
"Amber, we came for something else. Nathan's taking me out on a date and we want you to come with us."
She parroted excitedly and I could see Nathan nodding his head in agreement with what she had said.
However, I had no intention of honoring that invitation. I couldn't be the third wheel on their date. They had just met as mates and they needed all the privacy they could get to be acquainted with each other.
Me coming along was not going to help matters. Rather, I would feel more lonely and Lena obviously wouldn't like to see me like that. She ought to enjoy her first date with her mate and I wasn't going to allow myself to ruin it for her.
I shook my head and began to speak.
"No. I'm not interested. I feel like grabbing some rest. I don't like becoming the third wheel. You need all the time you can get in getting acquainted with your mate."
I told her bluntly and began to head for my room but Lena was someone who wouldn't take no for an answer. She rushed forward and blocked my advance.
"You either come along with me or I won't bother going again. Then, Nathan would begin to hold you responsible for ruining his first date with his mate." She announced angrily.
I grabbed my head in despair. This was the case of being stuck between the devil and the deep blue sea. Knowing I didn't have much choice I turned around and began to move out of the room.
"Let's go."
I said simply and soon felt Lena rush to my side and grabbed my hand in hers. Nathan went round and held her on the other side. Soon, we were heading out of the compound.
Alec's P .O. V
I sat on the landing of the top floor where the staircase leveled out. From where I sat, it was easy for me to see what was going on on the ground floor.
I was relaxing there with Nessa; my almost girlfriend but friends with benefits.
Now that we've found our mate, I needed to do away with Nessa. The only thing here however was that we had agreed to reject Amber.
Nessa laid her head on my legs and I could feel my wolf growl in discontent. I made it quiet by informing him that we had to enjoy the booty while it lasted.
I had enjoyed a steamy night with Nessa after I and my brothers had met and decided what to do with Amber.
I could see and hear all that Sophie was making her go through but because of our decision. I decided to stay put and not interfere in the tussle but I wasn't at peace with myself and my wolf.
It kept purring and whining about the mate bond and I couldn't count the number of times I almost stomped down the stairs to give Sophie some punishment.
I finally got over it after informing my wolf of how a weak and timid Omega shouldn't be our mate hence our decision to reject her.
However, I couldn't keep my eyes and mind away from her alluring figure coupled with her quiet demeanor. Could it be that she was just quiet and unwilling to make trouble, hence she was tagged as being weak?
I felt myself swaying towards her and when she happily congratulated her friend and confessed her deepest fears, I felt like jumping up and running to her.
I also wanted to comfort her. I looked on with pangs of pain as I saw Lena, her friend pull her away and lead her outside. She had agreed to go on a date with her and her mate who was our gamma.
Besides, I could see her gentle moves as she moved away from the house. I couldn't leave where I was as I didn't want Nessa or others to know that I'm getting attracted to her.
I was in a dilemma. One I didn't see myself getting out of very soon. It sure was going to be hard keeping up with the pretense.
