“What’s going on here?”
A voice called out in the distance. It was Lena. She walked forward and I resisted the urge to run into her arms and stay there.
“Your friend was caught shoplifting.” Ruby was quick to supply.
“Oh really? Did you see her stuff the dress in her bag, Ruby?” Lena was bold and confident. I wish I could be a little like her, maybe my life wouldn’t be so miserable.
“No, but she was going to eventually. Where do you think she’ll get enough money to pay for a dress like this?”
“So, you accused an innocent person of shoplifting based on your stupid assumptions?” Lena was only seconds away from tearing Ruby into a million pieces.
“It’s not an assumption. Everyone knows she’s poor.”
“And everyone knows you’re dumb but you don’t see me making a scene about it.” Lena pip
