Chapter Eleven

I made sure to train my eyes on them to find out what was going on between them. It was wrong to assume something was happening when it wasn't. Besides, I needed facts. I needed the facts handy when I confronted Lena later. It wasn't that my friend kept secrets from it. It was just that she only opened up whenever she felt convenient to do so and I wasn't sure I would be patient enough til then. So I thought of taking the bull by the horns. I would corner her and ask questions. If she attempted to evade me, I would hit her hard with the facts. Then, she would have no option but to open up to me. Another reason I was so concerned about her was her security. We were both omegas and if she was caught making such faces with the gamma, it could spell trouble for her. And that I needed to warn her against it. Those gathered around us at the moment we're most of the pack members and I could spot a few influential faces among them. The last thing I and Lena need at the moment would be a scandal. I was already being rumored to have used witchcraft or some sort of sorcery in making me be mated to the three Alpha brothers. If words were to come out that Lena was making faces and passes at the Gamma, it was going to be a double tragedy for us. To make matters worse for us, we were Omegas. The very last rung on the social ladders of werewolves. We would be convicted without a fair hearing. I would need to speak to Lena about my concerns as soon as possible. I was still leaning against the wall while my mind roamed far and near due to what was going on before me. I was beginning to regain my strength when I heard Sophie's voice. It was more of a growl. " I can see that you have made it your duty to stick your nose in an issue in which you're not supposed to interfere in. Last time I checked, the Gamma of the pack is usually a busy man who runs around to assist the three Alphas of our pack. But at the moment, it seems like he has also been affected by the sorcery carried out on the Alphas. I have to give it to you, Amber. You tried." Sophie shot out hotly and snickered in a hateful way. She smartened herself and stood in a way that suggested she wanted to fight. " And why shouldn't I poke my nose into this business? Are you taking pride in the fact that no one has called you out on your bullying to think you're privileged to do as you please?" I heard Nathan berate her angrily in a loud voice. Sophie's countenance changed in an instant. She knew she was being disgraced at the moment but she had to finish the fight she had started. Even if she had to play dirty. Her reputation was at stake. There was no way she would lose face. We all heard murmurings and we looked toward the direction where it came. Sophie was being bashed and booed by the very set of people who had hailed her earlier. " I think she finally met her match. She's been too arrogant for some time." An elderly man said without bothering to care if she heard or not. " Seems like the Alphas let her be because they probably thought she would be mated to them. She also didn't expect that she wouldn't be mated to them. That must have made her angry and wanted to take it out on poor, timid Amber." Another person murmured. " I'm sure she hadn't expected Gamma to come unlike this. He destroyed all of her plans. Poor Sophie now has herself in the same fix she had always placed Amber in." Someone else mocked. With every word or sentence that was directed at her, Sophie's face became more distorted with anger. I could see that her minions were beginning to make signs to her to let them leave now that they could still but she was adamant. I knew Sophie wasn't the type to give up. She would make sure she fought to the end and had the last laugh. " I can see you're going nuts, my dear Gamma. Why do you have to dirty yourself by standing up for these two lowlifes? They aren't worth the energy. I'm sure they would rub mud all over you if you choose to stick out for them. You know what? Let's just pretend like we never had this confrontation. You can just quietly let it go and return to your duty post." She walked forward and spoke to Nathan in a voice that was like she wanted to hypnotize him. She raised her right hand and placed it seductively on his shoulder before she leaned closer to him and spoke. " You know what the Alphas would do to that witch who tried to have them for herself, right? You're their right-hand man so you should know better than I do what they can do. You still have a chance. Grab this opportunity and leave. I need to teach that b**ch called Amber a bitter lesson so that in the future, she would learn to stay in her place." While she was speaking, I looked over at Lena and saw the way her face was. It was contorted with anger and possessiveness. She looked like she wanted to jump on Sophie and shred her into a million pieces. Knowing Lena, it was a matter of time. She already had her hands balled into tight fists and her eyes were already blazing. I quickly gathered all the strength I had and began to walk towards hers. However, Nathan beat me to it. He had roughly shrugged off Sophie's hand from his shoulder and walked away from her. He got to where Lena was standing and took hold of one of her balled fists. I was appalled by the thought of what would happen if Lena were to be implicated in this action. I was about to protest when I was cut short because he had started to talk. " Sophie, you wanted to know why I chose to stick out my neck for Amber and Lena. Well, I would tell you now and I would love everyone present here at the moment to listen attentively." He paused and looked down to look into Lena's eyes while mouthing some words only she could hear. She gave him a shy smile and nodded her head. He raised his head and took a minute to scan the people. Once he was sure he had their attention, he began to speak. " Lena is my mate and I would never let go of the slightest disrespect to her. Secondly, whoever Lena cares about is my concern. Since you already know the facts, I wouldn't bother to talk too much about this." Nathan said and began to leave with Lena. To say I was happy was an understatement. I was very happy for her. She had been able to fulfill her childhood dream. We've both dreamed of having mates who would lift us out of the ranks we were in. The moon goddess had been kind to grant our requests although mine was still uncertain at the moment. As Nathan took her hand and they walked by in front of me, I drew closer to her and embraced her. Nathan had to slow down. We were locked in each other's embrace saying nothing as we were too happy. Besides, we would still meet so it was best we kept the details to ourselves. Nathan gave a slight cough and I could see that he was already getting impatient. I gave him an understanding nod and quickly shooed Lena towards him. They both smiled and went out of the room with everyone congratulating and wishing them well. I looked on after them while I also wished for the same thing in my heart. " I'm sure you know the Alphas would never accept you. Let's see. They are yet to announce you to the pack which means they are taking their time. Don't worry. You would soon be rejected. Again, I want you to know that when you're eventually rejected and I become Luna, I would take my revenge. I would never let today's humiliation slide.`` Sophie's annoyed tone brought me back from my wishful thinking. She was partially right. Perhaps, the Alphas wanted to reject me. That was probably why I hadn't been announced to the pack. The thought alone made me weary and I felt like crying but I wouldn't do that here. At least, one thing was sure. Nobody would bully me again. Whoever did so would have Nathan to contend with and not everyone wanted to cross paths with the Gamma whenever it came to fighting.
