He cleared his throat and lifted his face slowly from his desk. He looked to be working on something when I walked in. “And who is really you?” he said with a freezing tone. I could literally pee on my pants because I was getting really nervous.
“Va……Vanessa……Vanessa sir, ” I stuttered. I could not get my act up probably because of how nervous I was. This man here was literally scaring the hell out of me.
“You've forgotten your name, have a seat Vanessa” he said while gesturing towards the seat a few inches away from me just close to his table. “So why are you here, Vanessa?” He asked. He was not the person I had met here two days ago when I came seeking a job. I guess he wasn't told that I would be coming.
“I was scheduled for an interview today,” I replied. He raised his face from the desk again and took a closer look at me.
“Yeah, the boss told me someone would be coming for an interview. I didn't expect you to come actually,” he replied. These people are really insane if you ask me. “You know this is a bar?” He asked curiously. Of course, I am aware it is a freaking bar.
“Yes sir,” I replied.
“You seem to be very shy,” he said curiously. I didn't know what to give him as a reply, so I preferred to keep quiet and watch him. “Not much of a talker, huh” he added.
“So, about the job, have I been accepted?” I asked. He looked at me closely for a while and cleared his throat.
“You are too fast, my love. Yes, you have been accepted to work here, obviously, but on one condition,” he replied. He wore a straight look on his face.
“What could that be, sir?” I asked curiously. He just got me in a position of utter confusion.
“You will have to do the morning and night shift if you want to be paid handsomely,” he said. Obviously, I have no choice. I really need to earn it so that I can know how much you will come up with for my mother's treatment.
“I sincerely have no problem with that, sir” I replied with a soft smile. That was actually the first time I had been smiling since I entered his office.
“That makes two of us. Welcome to the family, Vanessa” he said as he stretched his hand out for a handshake, which I slowly accepted.
I was finally happy that I was accepted for the job. I couldn't thank him enough. “You will resume tomorrow. I guess that is fine by you” he said. I nodded in positive affirmation and left his office.
I quickly rushed to the hospital to check on my mother and also disclose the good news to her. I was so excited that I could not keep such good news from her.
I rushed into her ward with so much excitement just to meet her being surrounded by doctors. I tried reaching out to her, but the nurses restrained me and tried to keep me away from getting to her.
“What is going on? Please talk to me?” I asked curiously with a perplexed look on my face.
“Ma'am, you need to calm down and wait at the reception while the doctors do their work,” the nurse urged me.
Though I was so worried about my mother's week being, I had to trust that the doctors had it all under control and return to the reception where the nurses asked me to wait.
This was really a twist of events because it wasn't up to four hours since I left mum in the hospital and went for an interview. I wasn't expecting any of this to happen.
“You can come in ma'am, the doctor wants to see you” one of the nurses quickly called out. Without thinking twice, I ran to the ward where my mother was, and there I found the doctor standing right beside my mother's bed. My mother was fast asleep, but she had a respirator in her mouth, which was unusual.
“What happened, doc?” I asked with a very perplexed look on my face. The doctor didn't look worried in his own way. He just seemed calm and relaxed compared to what I saw before me.
“Relax Vanessa, she just had a panic attack, so we had to calm her down” the doctor replied.
“But she is using a respirator, which wasn't how she was the last time I was here,” I said. I was in total confusion, and I seriously needed to understand the situation.
“Vanessa, relax, you just do your part and let us do ours,” he suggested. I heaved a deep sigh of relief and went ahead to take a seat next to where my mother laid.
The beginning of a new dawn brought forth the beginning of my life in a new phase. I finally have a job now, and I needed to put in everything I got into this job. I needed to show the bosses who I was made of.
I had to freshen up, but Mum was still asleep in the hospital. So I pressed a kiss on her forehead while she was asleep and left for my house. I had no money for a cab, so I went to the bar by foot. It was not actually a far walk from my house. Dressed in my red dress and a red scarf on my hair, I had a nice look to begin the day.
“You're quite early, miss Vanessa,” Mr. Johnson, who owns the bar, said as I walked into the bar. I wasn't actually expecting to meet him this morning.
“Good morning, sir. I am so glad to see you once again, sir, ” I said with a quite timid tone. He smiled and quickly threw an apron towards me.
“Quickly, let's start working” he said as he snapped his finger. I was all pumped up and ready to get working. The place was set to receive customers for the day.
