6 It was much to COMPASS’s surprise, when, two nights later, he was set upon and bundled violently into the car that had ghosted up out of the evening mist to stop alongside him with its door open. As the door slammed shut and they moved off, a match flared up to reveal the now familiar face of the American, Mr Lewis, opposite him. The other ‘assailant’, seated beside Lewis, was not familiar to him. The man sat straight-backed, staring at him, watching, listening, saying nothing, missing nothing. Frank Falzoni watched the watching game in the other two, letting it prolong for several moments before intervening. ‘Don’t worry about my colleague here. He only barks and bites when he needs to.
