Heat surged into my cheeks. "I can't just abandon the people who need me—the clinic, the patients… you know that. It's who I am." It was the one part of my life that still felt truly mine.
"And I'm telling you," Kevin pressed, his voice dropping even lower, "Lucien's world is merciless. It doesn't care about your altruism. If your secret surfaces, if anyone discovers the anonymous 'miracle doctor' running that south-side free clinic and the one all these rich families are struggling to find is actually Lucien Armandus's new wife, you'll be targeted from all sides. They won't hesitate to use you, or your patients, as leverage against him."
