Lucien's POV The gunfire stopped just as suddenly as it began. Smoke rose up from the trees that were slightly on fire, and the stench of burnt oil and blood clung to the air. My ears rang from the constant sound of bullets and the recoil of the gun, and all I could hear was the echo of my own heartbeat. My men shot down as many attackers as they could, clearing a path. Keating and I advanced to a clearing where we could finally see the cabin in the distance. The ambush intensified suddenly, leading us back into the forest to take cover behind the trees.
