Chapter 3: Breaking Point

Lily sprinted after Ava, her heart pounding with worry. “Ava! Wait!” she called, her voice barely audible over the chaos of the party behind them.

Ava burst through the front door, the cool night hitting her like a slap. She needed to escape, to breathe, but the moment she stepped outside a swarm of journalists surrounded her, their cameras flashing like strobe lights.

“Ava how do you feel about Dominic’s engagement?” one shouted, shoving a camera in her face.

Ava’s heart raced, panic clawing at her throat. She opened her mouth to say something but she couldn’t get the words out.

“Get away from me!” she finally managed to scream but her voice was drowned by the chaos.

“Just leave me alone!” she cried. Ava managed to get away from the journalists and went to her car and sped off.

Anger, betrayal and hurt gripped her all at once but above all, there was an overwhelming need to escape.

Her hands shook as she gripped the steering wheel, and before she knew it she was speeding down the empty street, the engine roaring as if it could outrun the devastation that had just torn her apart.

She didn’t care for how long she was driving. The only thing that mattered was for her to get away from everything, but the deeper she sped into the night, the more everything seemed to blur.

Her thoughts were racing, her mind spinning with the visions of Dominic and Sophie. The pain of it all was unbearable. Her tears blurred her vision that she didn’t see the car coming, luckily she was quick to get out of its way.

Even though she had avoided crushing with the car, Ava lost control of her brakes. The tires screeched as she tried to navigate the sharp turn, the car skidding out of control.

Her heart slammed in her chest as she struggled to regain controlled to regain control, but it was too late. Her car crashed into a tree with a deafening impact. For a moment, everything was still. The world fell silent, and then the explosion came.
