Soft moonlight bled through the dark grey sky, an opening that was barely able to be seen by many but for Sage it was easy. His small but doeful eyes looked up into the bright light and smiled, his eyes twinkled brightly and his mouth creased upwards into a happy grin. He raised his arms up to the sky the short Tufts of his brown hair almost blonde but not quite waved in the breeze.
Shouts brought my mind back to my surroundings and an unfamiliar sound blared out into the quiet setting.
"Everyone get to safety now", someone cried out loud to the open air. A little girl almost fell down the side of a cliff as a mother desperately dragged her many children along the grass. The siren kept on blaring and I shuddered trying to get up and get to safety. Running along the path, stones were digging into the rough skin along the soles of my feet, ignoring the pain, I continued hastily running towards the one person I couldn't live without. Doors closest to me were going down into the cellar below ground and I could see the door about to close. Taking a deep breath in, I followed the crowd, holding tightly onto the edge of my sweater.
After getting through the steel door my arms pressed against the cold metal wall through the doorway and I rested my head on top, taking deep breaths in and out to calm my breathing. I had to find them, I had to there was no choice. It was now or never. Releasing from the wall, I ran straight towards the open area and looked around for those brown sugar coated eyes.
Coldness shivered up my spine, where was she?
I closed my eyes and took another deep breath in, slowly rubbing my temple with the palm of my left hand. Sweat dropped from my skin as terror set deep into my body. I walked frantically around the entire space of the room and felt my heart rate pick up even more than usual. People stared at me as I walked past them again and again. I kicked the hard floor with my foot and grimaced in pain. My pants stuck to my skin chafing against the skin on the top of my thighs.
She should be here, she has to be. There is no other way or possibility. She was mining the rocks next to the prison doing community service like she has been doing for the past few weeks due to a misconception about that of course she solved. The people supervising should have protected her. I eventually gave up looking and sat in the corner staring at the back of the steel door. Her face never appeared in that doorway the only possible place she could have gone to, it was the closest. The countdown to locking the door for final lockdown sounded and I covered my ears feeling the crushing pain engulf my being.
The final number was counted and the bolts sealed the door completely shut, planes above sounded and all I could hear was explosions and people screaming as their loved ones couldn't get out. Then I heard her scream, the most horrible sound imaginable and I blacked out completely.
