Isaac's face falls. He should have known better than to assume that Amy would jump back into his arms, but he still can't help but feel a little disappointed. Isn't she happy to see him at all? He's been thinking of this moment for years, ever since he had to break up with her because his father was putting him in a boarding school for high school.
"Well, we could meet up after?" he asks hopefully, though he doesn't close the distance that she has created by taking a few steps back.
"I'll be busy," she says as she finally seems to get her wits back about her, before she begins to walk away. "Good bye."
"Amy, wait," he says desperately as he follows her. "I'm sorry, but can we please talk?"
"I told you, I'm busy," she says as she refuses to look over at him.
"I have to apologize, and I want to explain why I left," he says, which makes her pause for a second. She seems frozen, but just as quickly as she stopped, she begins to walk again.
"I don't owe you the time to explain yourself to me for you to clear your conscious," she says in a bitter tone. For so long, she had waited for him to contact her, to apologize and explain himself, but that was years ago. It's been six years, and he doesn't deserve the chance now. The fact that he thinks he can just waltz in and force an apology on her made her stomach churn and her chest hurt. It's too much. "Please go away."
"Amy, please. Just let me buy you a coffee when you're done for the day. I won't take up much time," he says in a soft, pleading voice.
Her stomach drops, and against her better judgment, she can't help but say, "fine. My classes end at 2 today. You can buy me coffee before I get lunch."
"I'll buy you lunch instead," he offers, pointing to the fountain in the middle of the courtyard. "Let's meet up there."
She frowns, but eventually nods slightly. "Yeah, okay fine. I gotta go now."
" 'Bye," he grins at her with a soppy smile that squeezes her heart.
Why is he doing this to me? she thinks to herself, tears stinging her eyes as she makes her way to her classroom. She's angry at herself for not saying no, but it was a moment of weakness. At lunch, she would tell him to leave her alone, and to never contact her again, because he lost his chance to be apart of her life a long time ago.
As she makes up her mind that she won’t let herself fall for his tricks again, Isaac is sitting on the edge of the fountain, thinking about how maybe he can make things right. If he can just explain to her what happened, maybe she won’t be so angry with him. Surely she can understand he didn’t have a choice, right? And after two years, when he became an adult, he had tried to contact her, but he was fairly certain that her mother had prevented her from getting any of his letters. He had no idea what her phone number was since it had been changed, and none of her social media profiles had the same handle so he struggled to find her online. She had to understand, right? He just had to explain himself.
Isaac was satisfied with the idea of her having lunch with him. Even if she didn’t let him explain everything to her, maybe just getting to hear bits and pieces would be enough for her to realize that he had never stopped loving her. He was just as enthralled with her today as he had been six years ago, even though his chest felt tight when he remembered the look of disgust and anger on her face. No, Amy would get over it. She had to…
Amy made it to her class with minutes to spare, but luckily she still was able to get a decent seat. When her professor announces that there will be no assigned seats, and that he just expects everyone to show up and be there for each class, her heart lifts.
‘Next class I can get a better seat then’ she assures herself, settling into her temporary seat.
The lecture doesn’t take the full hour and half as the Professor decides to just go over the syllabus and some basics of the class. Much to Amy’s annoyance, even after questions from the class, they’re released fifteen minutes early. She knows that if she goes back the way she came, Isaac will be there waiting for her, but she also knows that if she finds a way to go around him, that he’s just going to come back until she lets him talk it whatever is weighing on him.
‘I’m sure he’s stubborn as ever’ she thinks to herself, a bitter sweet smile tugging on her lips as she thinks of their childhood.
She had loved him so dearly, and for what? For him to leave her without even a good-bye. Sighing and giving into herself, she walks back to the fountain, not at all surprised to see Isaac sitting there, looking around like he somehow knew that her class had let out early. When his eyes found hers, he lit up, smiling widely and standing up. Her heart clenched, making her suddenly wish that they could turn back time. Like she could run to him and throw herself in his arms like she used too, but she knew that there was no way for that to happen. They could never go back and change what had happened.
“I found a nice Italian restaurant downtown. You still like Italian, right?” Isaac says by way of greeting her as they close the distance, him taking only a few strides away from the pond.
“I do,” Amy says softly, sliding her eyes down to his feet, as if just noticing how nice and shiny his expensive black shoes are. “It’s my favorite.”
“Just like I remember,” he says in a cheery tone, guiding her to his car by placing his hand on the small of her back.
“Don’t touch me,” she hissed, yanking herself away from him. He looks hurt again, and while she can’t help but feeling slightly bad for that, she also doesn’t want him to touch her. Not so casually, at least. “Just, keep your hands to yourself, alright?”
Despite the bitterness that poisons his smile, he nods. “Of course. That was careless of me. Let’s get to my car. My driver is waiting to take us.”
