The Velvet Trap and the Royal Gala

2022 Words
The rain had finally tapered off by the following afternoon, leaving behind a dense, clinging fog that blanketed the glass and iron conservatories of the Vaugard estate. Lalaine sat rigidly on a low velvet bench inside the dressing salon of the west wing as her hands folded tightly in her lap. Standing around her were three Lycan tailors, their measuring tapes snapping through the air like whipcord as they made rapid, silent adjustments to the garment she wore. It was a gown of heavy, midnight-blue silk, the exact shade of the Del Torre family crest she had been forced to abandon, with intricate silver embroidery cascading down the tight corset and sweeping into a long, dramatic train. The neckline was cut low enough to be elegant, yet tailored strategically to cover every fading bruise on her collarbone and shoulders. "Hold still, human." The head tailor, a sharp-faced Lycan named Master Gerald, ordered as he pinned the cuff of her sleeve. "If you shift your posture, the hem will drag in the mud, and Beta Barton will have my hide." "I am holding still," Lalaine whispered, her voice barely carrying across the room. "She looks like a porcelain doll," One of the assistant tailors murmured, pulling the laces of the corset a fraction tighter. Lalaine gasped softly as the breath caught in her lungs. "One harsh squeeze from a high-ranking wolf tonight, and she’ll snap in half." "The Alpha did not purchase her to be squeezed," Gerald snapped, smoothing the silk over her hips. "She is his escort for the High Council Gala. She is meant to look expensive, noble, and completely subdued. Do not speak unless spoken to, human. The mortal aristocrats at the Grand Sovereign Hotel are vicious, but the Lycan lords attending are far worse." The heavy double doors of the salon swung open. Beta Barton stepped inside, impeccably dressed in a tailored black tuxedo with a crisp silver pocket square. His amber eyes swept over Lalaine, assessing her from head to toe with his usual unyielding scrutiny. "Is she ready, Gerald?" Barton asked, adjusting the onyx cufflinks at his wrists. "She is, Beta Barton," Gerald replied with a low bow. "The fit is exact. The bruises are entirely concealed." "Good," Barton said, gesturing toward the door. "Stand up, Lalaine. The convoy is waiting in the main courtyard." Lalaine carefully rose to her feet, the heavy silk rustling around her ankles. The stiff structure of the corset forced her chin up, giving her an air of aristocratic grace that felt like a distant, ghost-like memory of her past life. "Beta Barton... what am I expected to do tonight? You haven't given me my instructions." Barton walked alongside her as they navigated the wide, marble corridors leading toward the grand hall. "Your role tonight is simple, yet delicate. You are Lady Lalaine of the House of Del Torre. To the human nobility present, you are a fallen noblewoman who has entered into a private... contractual agreement with the Vaugard conglomerate." Lalaine’s lip twitched with bitter irony. "A contract? Is that what we are calling a slave auction now?" "In polite society, appearances are everything," Barton replied smoothly, not a single muscle in his face shifting. "Your stepmother, Lady Morga, will be in attendance tonight alongside your cousin, Marcus Del Torre." Lalaine stopped dead in her tracks, her breath catching in her throat. "M-Morga? She... will she be there?" Barton turned to face her as his gaze was cold and calculating. "Yes. She believes you are dead, executed by the assassin she hired. When she sees you standing beside the Demon Alpha, she will panic. Her guard will drop, and she will reach out to her syndicate contacts. You will observe her reactions, identify her handlers, and report every whispered word to me." "And... and the Alpha?" Lalaine asked, her pulse hammering against her ribs. "What will he do?" "The Alpha will do what he always does," Barton said as his voice dropped to a low, warning register. "He will radiate power, demand absolute obedience, and ensure no one dares challenge his presence. Your job is to stay by his side, act as his human interpreter when dealing with mortal members of council, and keep your mouth shut regarding pack matters." "And if Morga tries to speak to me?" "Let her," Barton smiled, a terrifyingly sharp expression. "Let her see that the girl she tried to murder is now under the protection of the deadliest Alpha in the hemisphere. Now, move." The Grand Sovereign Hotel was a monument to obscene, modern luxury. Perched on a Cliffside overlooking the roaring ocean, its glass facade gleamed under the flashing lights of hundreds of press cameras and security details. Wealthy humans in diamond-encrusted gowns and tailored suits mingled with powerful Lycan Alpha couples, the tense air thick with political maneuvering and underlying hostility. When the Vaugard convoy pulled up to the red carpet, the surrounding chatter of the crowd noticeably dimmed. The security detail swarmed the perimeter, clearing a wide path as the door of the primary armored vehicle opened. Alpha Wilrhic stepped out first. He was a towering, majestic sight in a bespoke, midnight-black tuxedo, his massive shoulders giving him an imposing physical presence that commanded the entire courtyard. But as always, it was his face that drew terrified gasps from the crowd. The terrifying iron mask gleamed under the harsh spotlight, its snarling wolf features fixed in a cold, demonic expression. The narrow eye slits held their distinct, icy silver light. The ambient chatter vanished entirely. A heavy, suffocating chill swept across the red carpet, forcing several human socialites to clutch their coats while nearby Lycan warriors lowered their heads in instinctual submission. Wilrhic turned back to open the vehicle door. He extended his leather-gloved hand into the cabin. Lalaine stared at the glove, remembering the strange, consuming warmth that had passed between them in the archive vault just days prior. Her heart slammed against her ribs while she placed her small, gloved hand into his palm. His fingers closed around hers, not tightly enough to hurt, but with a firm, absolute possession that pulled her effortlessly out of the car. The contrast between them was striking, the massive, masked titan in black, and the fragile, breathtaking human girl in midnight blue silk hanging onto his arm. Press cameras flashed frantically, the clicking of shutters sounding like a swarm of locusts. "Is that... Lady Lalaine Del Torre?" "I thought she disappeared weeks ago!" "Look at her... she’s standing with Alpha Vaugard!" "Has he claimed a human?" Wilrhic didn't give the crowd a single glance. He adjusted his stride, slowing his massive pace just enough for Lalaine to walk comfortably at his side without tripping over her heavy train. His proximity was overwhelming, the scent of cedarwood, ozone, and rich leather enveloped her, creating an invisible shield against the hostile eyes of the crowd. They entered the grand ballroom, a cavernous space filled with crystal chandeliers, soaring ceilings, and towering arches. High-ranking wolves and human politicians parted like the Red Sea as Wilrhic walked down the center aisle, Barton trailing a respectful three paces behind. "Stay close," Barton murmured from behind her. "Lord Julian Thorne is approaching from the western balcony." Lalaine kept her posture rigid, her chin held high as a distinguished, silver-haired human man in a lavish velvet suit stepped into their path, flanked by two heavily armed Lycan bodyguards. "Alpha Vaugard," Lord Thorne announced, bowing his head slightly, though his eyes darted nervously to the terrifying iron mask. "It is a rare honor to have you grace the High Council Gala. We were unsure if the rumors of your recent... acquisitions were true." Wilrhic didn't speak. He stood perfectly still, his silent presence radiating a pressure so intense that Thorne’s bodyguards visibly shifted their weight, their nostrils flaring as they fought the urge to submit. Thorne turned his sharp gaze to Lalaine, his lips curving into a patronizing smile. "And Lady Lalaine. A surprise indeed. The House of Del Torre was reported to be in mourning after your sudden... tragic departure from the capital." Lalaine felt Wilrhic’s leather glove tighten fractionally over her fingers. It was a subtle, grounding weight. She looked Lord Thorne directly in the eye, drawing upon every ounce of her noble training. "Reports of my demise were greatly exaggerated, Lord Thorne," Lalaine said, her voice clear, resonant, and entirely devoid of fear. "As you can see, I am in exceptional health, currently managing private trade logistics on behalf of the Vaugard estate." Thorne’s smile faltered slightly. "Logistics? A human handling Lycan trade routes?" "She handles my affairs, Thorne." Barton stepped forward, translating the silent tilt of Wilrhic’s mask. "And the Alpha suggests you focus on your own falling shipping margins in the southern ports before inquiring about his internal management." Thorne flushed, bowing quickly. "Of course. My apologies, Alpha Vaugard. Please, enjoy the evening." As Thorne retreated into the crowd, Lalaine let out a quiet, trembling exhale. "Thank you, Beta Barton." "Do not thank me," Barton replied coldly. "Look to your ten o'clock. The main target has arrived." Lalaine turned her head toward the grand balcony stairs. Stepping down into the ballroom was Lady Morga Del Torre. She was clad in an ostentatious crimson gown, adorned with rubies that caught the chandelier light. Walking beside her was Marcus Del Torre, her cousin, who was sipping champagne with an arrogant smirk. Morga was laughing at a joke made by a nearby member of council when her eyes swept across the floor and locked directly onto Lalaine. The champagne glass in Morga’s hand slipped. It shattered against the marble floor with a sharp clatter, sparkling wine splashing over her red hem. Her face went deathly pale, the color draining from her skin so fast she looked like a corpse. She stumbled back a step, clutching her chest, her eyes wide with absolute, unadulterated horror. "She sees you," Barton murmured, a hint of dark satisfaction in his tone. "Look at her hands. She is shaking." Lalaine watched her stepmother, the woman who had drugged her, stripped her of her birthright, and sold her to an assassin. A strange, cold fire ignited in Lalaine’s chest, a feeling she had never experienced before. She was no longer the helpless girl crying on the floor of her bedroom. She was standing at the side of the most feared creature in the realm. Morga grabbed Marcus’s arm, whispering frantically in his ear. Marcus looked up, his arrogant smirk instantly vanishing as his eyes landed on Lalaine and then shifted to the towering, masked form of Alpha Wilrhic looming beside her. Marcus looked as if he might vomit on the spot. Slowly, deliberately, Wilrhic turned his entire body toward the balcony where Morga stood. He didn't move a muscle. He didn't raise a hand. But the atmospheric pressure in the ballroom plummeted instantly. A wave of dark, icy energy rolled off his shoulders, sweeping across the floor and hitting Morga and Marcus like a physical blow. Morga gasped, clutching her throat as she practically collapsed against the balcony railing, terrified to even look the Demon Alpha in the eye. Wilrhic then slowly lowered his head, bringing his masked face down near Lalaine’s ear. The heat of his breath washed against her skin, making her shiver beneath her heavy silk gown. Through the narrow eye slits of the iron mask, the silver light flared softly. "They tremble before you," Barton translated low, his voice carrying the silent message Wilrhic had projected. "Show them no mercy." Lalaine looked up at the iron mask, her heart hammering a frantic, erratic beat. For the first time since her enslavement, she didn't feel fear towards the monster standing beside her. She felt something far more dangerous… protection. "I won't," Lalaine whispered back, her voice firm. Wilrhic adjusted his grip on her hand, his gloved fingers intertwining with hers in a slow, possessive hold. Together, the masked Alpha and his human escort walked further into the grand hall, leaving the shattered remnants of her past cowering in the shadows behind them.
