Chapter 19: Ethan?

As they turned to leave, the figure stepped out of the shadows. Aurora's heart skipped a beat as she saw the figure's face. It was Ethan.

"Ethan?" Aurora whispered, her voice trembling. "Is that you?"

Ethan's eyes locked onto hers, and for a moment, Aurora saw a glimmer of recognition. But then, his expression changed, and he looked away.

"I've been watching you," Ethan said, his voice cold and detached. "I know what you're looking for."

Aurora's mind was reeling. What was going on? Why was Ethan acting so strangely?

Suddenly, Max stepped forward, his eyes locked onto Ethan's. "You're not who you seem to be, are you?" Max said, his voice low and menacing.

Ethan's eyes flickered, and for a moment, Aurora saw a flash of fear. But then, his expression hardened, and he smiled.

"You have no idea what's going on," Ethan said, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "You're just pawns in a much larger game."

Aurora's eyes widened as she realized the truth. Ethan wasn't missing. He was working with the people who were after them.

But why?

"What do you want, Ethan?" Aurora asked, trying to keep her voice steady.

Ethan's eyes locked onto hers, and for a moment, Aurora saw a glimmer of the man she once knew. But then, his expression changed, and he looked away.

"I want you to stop looking for me," Ethan said, his voice cold and detached. "I want you to forget about me and move on with your life."

Aurora's heart ached as she realized the truth. Ethan was gone, and in his place was a stranger.

"Why are you doing this, Ethan?" Aurora asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Ethan's eyes locked onto hers, and for a moment, Aurora saw a flash of pain. But then, his expression hardened, and he looked away.

"You wouldn't understand," Ethan said, his voice cold and detached.

Suddenly, Max stepped forward, his eyes locked onto Ethan's. "I think we understand more than you think," Max said, his voice low and menacing.

Ethan's eyes flickered, and for a moment, Aurora saw a flash of fear. But then, his expression hardened, and he smiled.

"We'll see about that," Ethan said, his voice dripping with sarcasm.

As Ethan turned to leave, Aurora saw a glimmer of hope. Maybe, just maybe, she could still save him.
