We stayed until the café began stacking chairs at the empty tables. I glanced around. "Are they throwing us out?" "Politely." "How embarrassing." "I've survived worse." "So have I." The words escaped before I could stop them. Kael looked at me. For a moment, the past hovered between us again. Then he stood. "Come on." Outside, the streets were almost empty. A cool breeze stirred the leaves overhead. The rain had left the pavement damp, reflecting the streetlights in broken streaks of gold. We walked slowly towards the river. Neither of us seemed in a hurry to leave. "It was a good evening," Kael said. "It was." "I'd like to see you again." My heart fluttered. Clarissa immediately woke from whatever romantic daydream she'd been having. "Say yes." "I'd like that too."
