Leona insisted I stay behind the glass counter and serve the customers, David took an extra shift because his date stood him up and his sister was staying at her friend's so he had nothing to do, Leona told him to take some rest but he wouldn't listen. He tried asking me many times why I was acting out and I kept saying it was nothing but Leona came and asked him to quit asking me. "One chocolate donut and vanilla milkshake, thanks." The woman with glasses smiled in front of me, her smile was addicting so I couldn't help but smile back. "The donut is on the house, enjoy!" I pushed the plate with an extra donut in front of her as Mads brought out her milkshake. There were not many customers because it was closing time so Leona didn't mind us giving out extra food. Every Sunday she insisted the chefs make extra treats so she would have them delivered in an orphanage near her house. She was a kind lady.  Leona was forty-five years old but people always mistaken her for being in her mid thirties, her husband abandoned their son and her for some good job abroad, he didn't wish to take them with him. The first year after her husband left was miserable for her, she was distracted is to say the least, she was vulnerable and lost, there were uncountable times when we had to ask her to stay home and rest.  "Okay, we're closing!" David sang and went to the door to flip the board from 'Open' to 'Closed', "Alright, take your treats, bring your stuff from lockers and take the paycheck from me." Leona instructed. "Hey Mads, you know I saw this handsome hunk standing beside our café leaning on his car, I saw him when I arrived and I saw him now too, I wonder who he's waiting for." David chuckled at Mads, Mads was gay so David's tone was teasing. "I can assure you not for me, mine is cooking for me at home." He blushed stuffing his head inside the locker as we all roared with laughter. "You're seeing someone?" I asked shocked, he turned to me in surprise, "Why do you sound so shocked?" He asked. "Because of the fact I heard you talk about how bullshit relationships are?" I questioned. "Ah...it's not serious?" He stammered looking around, everyone had left, it was me and Mads arguing and David sitting on the bench behind enjoying the show. "Bruh that guy is waiting for you at your place with dinner, too much for not being serious." David scoffed from behind, Mads threw him a glare that meant him to shut up and he did. "You can talk to us, and if it's serious you don't have to pretend anything, remember communication is important." I kept a hand on his shoulder. "I'm a decade older than you guys, I should be giving this talk and not the other way round." He closed his locker and looked at me and David. "Everyone around here knows how big of a softie you are, so who tops?" David grinned and I gave him a finger, Mads and I both walked out to take our money as we heard David whining behind us. "What took you so long?" Leona asked, pushing her reading glasses, "Mads is getting some!" David yelled from behind us, "David." I glared.  "What? I don't mean it in a bad way, I'm happy for him." He walked to Mads and stood in front of him, "you're aware right?" He turned serious. "Yes..don't worry about it." He hugged David, Leona and I shook our heads looking at them. We are family here in the café, and the employees who join for half time don't take much time to mix with us, it's always been like that. We work together, we tease each other, we support one another and pretty much everything. "So tell me who tops?" David asked, earning a punch from Mads on his arm, "kinky." He grinned. "Piss off David." I grumbled. "Alright, David take this," Leona held an envelope in her hand, David danced and took the envelope kissing her on cheeks. "Mads," She called him, he smiled and took the envelope stuffing it in his back pocket. "Thanks." He mumbled. "Rose," She held my envelope in her hand, I took three steps and took my envelope, smiling. "I'll wait until you come out and I'll lock up." I offered, we always did turns, today was Taylor's but he left early. "I'm expecting company, I'll lock up. You can head home.." "At this time?" Worry clear in my voice, we didn't exactly live in a highly safe area, sure there were tall buildings and street lights and footpaths and people walking around but it wasn't safe at night. "Yes, I'm an adult." She said sarcastically. "Of course. I'm just worried." I said quickly. "Don't worry about me, should I tell the guys to drop you home?" She asked looking out of the glass to see David and Mads hitting each other playfully. "No, the paths are totally different. Don't bother." I declined politely. "Alright then, get going, good night." She waved. "Good night." I pulled the door and waved to Leona before walking away, I saw Mads and David bickering and shook my head chuckling. "God stop it you guys, five year olds are better than you both," I hit David. "Ooch! And they are better because they are stupid, they only care about toys their sleep and taking a dump in diapers." He shrugged. "True." Mads laughed. "I'm outta here, I need some sleep." Mads yawned.  "Get some man!!" David ran away as he saw Mads running after him. "Bye!!" I yelled at both of them and turned away to leave. I looked around to see if anyone was following me as Leona instructed before and after taking a good look I started walking as fast as I could, my grip on the brown bag in my hand filled with three cinnamon buns tightened, I started counting my steps to distract my mind. "Excuse me, ma'am!" I didn't look back, if you want to die here in the middle of the street with cinnamon buns in your hand then look back, just keep walking. I shouted in my head, random lyrics from random songs started booming in my head, I kept on chanting one word out of panic. "Ma'am!!" The person's hand landed on my shoulder, turning back I hit him with my brown bag, "ooch, my nose!" His voice sounded familiar but I didn't care, I hit him anywhere my hands could reach on his upper body, "it's me!" He stepped back from me and covered his nose.I couldn't see him but I saw some other thing. The ring in his middle finger in his right hand, he was the guy from the café this morning. "I'm sorry. s**t, I'm sorry." I reached out to examine his nose but he jumped back from me again, I stopped mid way, my hands raised and my mouth open, "I'm sorry." I mumbled, backing away. "You hit mean, ouch! " he groaned in pain, I couldn't believe I did that, I was afraid to even raise my voice this morning and now I just hit this man out of nowhere. "Sorry." I said embarrassed.  "Don't be, by the way you could've hit that man you know." He said softly, he took steps towards me and came close. "I gotta go." I mumbled quickly, turning away to leave. "Please wait, I can give you a ride, you're clearly afraid to walk at this time, I insist." He smiled. "No, it's okay." I declined, riding to my place with a complete stranger at night wasn't a great idea, he'd know where I live and it wasn't a risk I was ready to take. "I have something important to discuss, please?"  "We..we can walk." I stammered, I kept repeating this was a bad idea, that I should just say no and walk away, but he looked genuine. I could take him elsewhere other than my building, I thought. But then I'll have to walk back to my place all by myself and it would be late. "You sure? I have a car back there," he pointed with his thumb past his shoulder. I saw a black parked just beside the cafè, so he was the man David talked about. "I'm leaving, you can tag along if you have anything to discuss," I shrugged and turned on my heels to walk. "Damn woman you're hot headed," He mumbled jogging behind me, a smile stretched on my lips. "So what is it?" I asked him, not bothering to look up to him. "I've filed a complaint against the man who molested you this afternoon, the cops will come tomorrow to the café for photage, and don't worry they won't bother you for anything, I've made sure of it, they'll put him behind the bars."  A gasp tore out of my mouth and my feet stopped walking, I stared at him in horror, "You had no right." I said calmly, I didn't want him to see how he managed to create havoc in my head with this piece of information. "I know I'm sorry, but it is important he is going to pay ma'am." He spoke softly. "I didn't want any cops involved, I know how dirty it gets, I've been through it." I said irritated. "I've made sure they won't involve you in any way, they will just stop by and ask for the photage." His hands grabbed my shoulder and squeezed, I didn't jerk away instead I relaxed. "You sure?" I whispered.  "Yes. Promise." He smiled. "Okay." I nodded and his hands moved away from my shoulder and it felt cold in that place. I shivered. "Let's get you home." He grinned making me chuckle. "What's your name?" He asked as we crossed the deserted road, still there blocks to cover, I sighed. "Rosaline Williams." I answered. "Guzman. I'm Guzman."  "Okay, I'm Guzman." I laughed. "Smart!"  "So what do you do?" I asked. "I'm vice president of a company. "And you turned your colleague because he molested a stranger? Wow." I breathed, rubbing my hands together, God it's cold. "I did what had to be done, I could see how you felt, I couldn't digest the thought that I didn't react right away. I'm sorry." He was cute, I thought. "Why are you apologising, he was an asshole. And I appreciate what you did, really.." I trailed off looking at him. "You're a brave woman, start acting up." He cupped my right cheek. "You're wrong, I'm a coward." I whispered. "For a coward you hit bad, my nose still hurts." He pulled away. "Oh Lord, show," I raised my hand and caressed his nose, he chuckled. "What?" I was baffled. "And caring." He added. "It doesn't hurt does it, you!!" I hit his nose lightly. "Ouch! That hurt alright!" He backed away in pain.  We both stopped laughing and he asked me to lead the way, we both walked in silence on empty roads, I constantly rubbed my hands because of cold, just one block before mine he glanced at me, "I'm sorry I would've loved to give you my jacket but it's in my car, I don't feel much cold because of the medication I take so I had to take my jacket off because I was hot." He said smiling sadly. "Don't bother, my house is just one block away, thanks." I assured him, taking a left we saw a group of men standing against the light pole, I lowered by graze and my hand sought for his hand. Intertwining our fingers I squeezed in fear, I half expected him to pull away or say something, he did neither. He took our intertwined hands and kept it on my shoulder in a way that my hand was against my chest and his hand wrapped around my neck. "I'm here." He whispered as we passed them, I didn't utter a word. "This is me." I said looking up at my building, this is over I thought sadly. "Yes. Well,...." He trailed off. "I don't want you walking to your car alone." I muttered before even I could register what I was saying. "Would you be a kind lady and help me walk to my car?" He smiled. "Funny," I chuckled, "but seriously it's dangerous. Please." I added in a whisper. "I'll call my driver here, happy?" He asked, taking my other hand in his much larger one. "Yes." I shivered, "You'd have to let go of my hand to make a call." I blushed when he made no efforts to pull away earlier. "Right, sorry." His right hand left mine and searched for his phone in his pocket. His green eyes under the street light looked almost the shade of blue and his dark brown hair almost black, he was alluring to anyone in his way, including me. He swiftly typed something in his phone and raised his hand to his ear, his eyes never left mine for a moment, I couldn't look away; he was breathtaking.  "Yes, I'm four blocks away from the location, I'll send you my location." He hung up without waiting for his chauffeur to answer. "This is you then, it was nice meeting you, go up her your sleep. Good night." He smiled rocking on his heels, he hesitated a bit, I wondered what he was thinking but then he closed the distance between us and kissed my forehead. For a moment I thought I forgot how to breath until I heard him chuckle, I opened my eyes slowly to see him chuckling slowly, "what?" I asked. "You're cute." I smiled. "Go on, it's late." He turned me around with a hand on my shoulder, I wanted to slump my shoulders badly because he didn't say anything like; let's meet someday or hey, can I get your number? Nothing. I felt his hand leave my body, I turned around as he frowned looking at me. "Something wrong?" He asked.  "I'll stay until your driver arrives."  "That's no…" "I insist." I smirked and he laughed. "Smart."  "I've learned from the best sir," I mocked him. "I didn't doubt it for a moment ma'am." We turned our heads as we saw a black car approaching us. My hand went across my face to cover my eyes from the headlights, standing in front of us the car stopped, this is him. "Good night." I sighed.  "Not yet," he grinned, "I'll walk you to your door." He said. "It's not necessary really."  "I say it is." He gestured with his hand to the driver inside the car to wait and turned with me walking the few steps in the building, I was starting to get conscious because of the view inside the building, cracked walls, water dropping down drop by drop in the corner, elevator which was out of order and yelling neighbours. No, I wasn't talking about Richmond and his wife but the other couple living on the first floor.  "I'm sorry, it's embarrassing." I said looking down. "Don't be, happens." He said quietly. We both walked in the small hallway and stood in front of my apartment, I was wondering if it would be alright to call him in or not. "Would you like to come in?" I asked, pulling out the key to the apartment from my bag, the brown bag in my hand almost slipped if it weren't for his hand which held it and took it from me, "careful."  "Would you like to come in?" I asked, unlocking the door. Yes do come in and see how miserably I live. "Some other time?" He raised his brows and handed me the bag. "Sure."  "Good night then, and this for the final time." He chuckled. "Yes, good night." Before I knew what I was doing I pressed a kiss on his left cheek. "Bye." I turned and stepped in my apartment closing the door after smiling at him. I got out of my heels to let my feet breathe some fresh air, I picked up one shoe and snuffed it and pulled away quickly when it smelt bad, I needed to put some soda in it so the smell would go away, I made a note. I moaned as I felt a slight movement in my legs, I curled my fingers and enjoyed the feeling. Resting my bag on the kitchen island and throwing the keys in the bowl I decided to take a shower, I can't add soothing because I don't have warm water to enjoy, and taking a cold shower sucks is to put it mildly, pun intended. I walked slowly in my messy room and plugged my phone to the charger beside the nightstand, the situation of the nightstand was terrible, it looked as though it would break and collapse any memonet given. I stripped from my clothes, grabbed the green towel which I left on the bed in the morning and entered the bathroom, I brushed my teeth first in the sink and looked at my face in the mirror, I looked like s**t, my skin needs some good exfoliation and my body needs rest. I took a piss and then stood below the shower head, my left hand rested on the knob. I had no desire to take a cold shower when I was freezing a few moments ago, but I wanted the water on my skin, I wanted to relax under water. I turned the knob and waited for the cold water to pour on me, I waited for a few moments more, but nothing came, I looked up and tapped on the shower head, great there's no water. I turned the knob, washed my face and walked out of the bathroom wrapping the towel on my body. ▪▪▪
