The dim light from the desk lamp flickered against the polished mahogany surface, casting deep shadows across Damien Kain’s office. The atmosphere was charged, tense as Lila Morgan stood facing him, her hands clenched at her sides. Her heart pounded in her chest, but she refused to let it show.
“You’ve made quite a mess, Miss Morgan,” Damien said, his voice calm yet tinged with a hint of something darker. His sharp blue eyes fixed on her as if he could dissect her very soul with a single glance.
Lila met his gaze without flinching. “Reporting the truth isn’t a mess. It’s my job,” she said, her voice steady but laced with defiance.
Damien’s lips curled into a faint smile, but there was nothing comforting about it. He leaned back in his chair, his expression unreadable. “Your job, as you call it, has placed you in a very precarious position. You’ve made enemies, Miss Morgan. Enemies who don’t forgive so easily.”
The air grew thick with tension. Lila’s pulse quickened, but she fought to maintain her composure. “Are you threatening me?” she asked, though the question felt almost absurd. She had never imagined finding herself in a situation like this—threatened by the very man she had once hoped to expose.
Damien stood abruptly, his towering figure casting a long shadow over her. “I don’t make threats. I make decisions,” he said coldly, his words slicing through the air like a blade.
Lila’s mind raced, but she forced herself to remain calm. She had one question lingering in her mind, a question that would determine her fate. “What kind of decision are we talking about here?”
Damien’s eyes never left hers as he took a step closer, his voice now a low murmur. “You have two choices: You can walk out of here and face the consequences of your actions… or you can marry me.”
The words hung in the air, surreal and impossible. Lila’s breath caught in her throat. Was he serious? This had to be some kind of sick joke.
“Excuse me?” she whispered, her voice barely audible as she tried to process the absurdity of it all.
Damien’s expression remained cold, calculating. “You heard me. This is your only chance. I can guarantee your safety if you marry me. The Kain family doesn’t take kindly to those who cross us, Miss Morgan.”
Lila felt a surge of anger rise within her, her fists clenched at her sides. “You think you can solve everything with a marriage proposal? You’re insane,” she spat, her voice trembling with rage.
Damien’s gaze hardened. “Perhaps. But it’s the only way I can protect you now.”
