Six Months Later New York City Adrian Cole — 30 Eleanor Cole — 29 Marcus Bennett — 31 Sarah Bennett — 29 Kai Bennett — 11 ⸻ There was a time Adrian Cole believed happiness was fragile. Now… He believed it was growing inside his wife. Six months into Eleanor’s pregnancy, life had settled into a rhythm Adrian never wanted to end. Every morning began the same way. He would wake before dawn. Not because of work. But because Eleanor had somehow managed to steal every inch of the blanket again. He would sigh dramatically. She would pretend to be asleep. He would tug gently at the blanket. She would smile without opening her eyes. “You’ve done this on purpose.” “No…” “You’re smiling.” “I’m asleep.” “Liar.” She would finally open one eye. “I learned from the best negotiator in New York.” Adrian kissed her forehead. “I created a monster.” “You married one.” “And I’d do it again.” Every single time. Without hesitation. ⸻ Adrian had become insufferable. At least according to Marcus. “You check on her every thirty minutes.” “It’s forty-five.” Marcus stared at him. “You corrected me.” “Because you’re wrong.” Sarah laughed into her coffee. “You have a pregnancy app.” “It’s useful.” “You have three pregnancy apps.” “They all tell me different things.” “They all tell you the baby is the size of a fruit.” “The fruits change.” Marcus buried his face in his hands. “I miss the old Adrian.” “The one who thought sleep was optional?” “Exactly.” “I don’t.” Adrian smiled. Not because Marcus was teasing him. Because, for the first time in years… Life felt exactly the way it was supposed to. ⸻ Kai had appointed himself Head of Baby Security. Nobody had given him the title. He simply announced it one Sunday afternoon. “I have rules.” Marcus looked up from the barbecue. “I’m almost afraid to ask.” Kai held up a notebook. “Rule number one.” Everyone stared. “No yelling near the baby.” “The baby’s not born yet,” Sarah pointed out. “They can still hear.” Adrian nodded thoughtfully. “Fair point.” Marcus blinked. “You are encouraging him.” “I’m supporting good leadership.” Kai grinned proudly. “Rule number two.” “No spicy food.” Eleanor looked horrified. “Excuse me?” “It might make the baby cry.” “Who told you that?” “The internet.” Marcus sighed. “There it is.” Kai ignored him. “Rule number three.” He looked directly at Adrian. “You have to come home earlier.” Adrian frowned. “I do?” “You promised you’ll teach the baby basketball.” “I did.” “So you need practice.” Adrian laughed. “I’ll keep that in mind.” Kai smiled, satisfied. Then he knelt in front of Eleanor. He rested his small hand against her stomach. “Hi, little one.” The room fell quiet. “I’m Kai.” A tiny kick answered him. Kai gasped. “They know me!” Eleanor laughed through happy tears. “I think they do.” Kai beamed. “I’m going to be the best big brother ever.” Adrian watched the scene quietly. He didn’t speak. He simply memorized it. He wanted to remember everything. ⸻ The nursery was finally finished. Soft cream walls. A wooden crib Adrian had spent two entire weekends assembling because he refused to let anyone else do it. A rocking chair beside the window. Tiny clothes folded neatly inside the dresser. A shelf lined with children’s books Adrian had secretly started collecting months ago. He stood in the doorway one evening. Unable to look away. Eleanor wrapped her arms around him from behind. “What are you thinking?” He swallowed. “I never imagined I’d get this.” “What?” “This.” He gestured around the room. “A home.” “A family.” “You.” Eleanor rested her cheek against his back. “You deserve all of it.” Adrian turned around. “I don’t know what I did to deserve you.” She smiled softly. “You loved me.” “As if that was difficult.” “It wasn’t.” She cupped his face. “It still isn’t.” He kissed her slowly. Carefully. Like he had all the time in the world. Neither of them knew… Time had already begun slipping through their fingers. ⸻ It started on a Tuesday. An ordinary Tuesday. The kind people forget. Eleanor woke with a dull ache in her lower back. She frowned. Probably nothing. The doctor had warned her pregnancy would become more uncomfortable as the months passed. She drank water. Rested. Read a book. Waited for it to pass. By noon… The ache had become cramps. She reached for her phone. Then stopped. Adrian was presenting the biggest merger Aiden Corp had handled all year. She didn’t want to worry him. “I’ll wait another hour,” she whispered to herself. She stood up. A warm sensation spread between her legs. Confused… She looked down. Blood. For one impossible second… Her mind refused to understand what her eyes were seeing. “No…” Her hands began to shake. “No… no…” She reached for her phone so quickly it slipped from her trembling fingers. It hit the floor. She picked it up. Dialed Adrian. The call connected on the second ring. “Eleanor?” She couldn’t speak. “Eleanor?” “…Adrian…” The sound of her voice made his heart stop. “What’s wrong?” “I’m bleeding…” Silence. Then— “I’m coming.” He didn’t ask another question. He didn’t end the meeting. He didn’t explain. He simply stood. Walked out of the boardroom. Ignored every voice calling his name behind him. Nothing… Nothing mattered except getting to her. ⸻ By the time Adrian reached the house… An ambulance was already outside. His heart dropped. He ran. Not caring that people were staring. Not caring that his expensive suit was soaked with rain. He found Eleanor on the stretcher. Her face was pale. Terrified. “I’m here.” She grabbed his hand desperately. “I’m scared.” His own hands were shaking. But he smiled anyway. “It’s okay.” She searched his eyes. “Is our baby okay?” He squeezed her hand tighter. “They will be.” He prayed… For the first time in years… He prayed. ⸻ The hospital smelled of antiseptic. The seconds stretched into hours. Doctors rushed in and out. Machines beeped. Voices blurred together. Adrian never let go of Eleanor’s hand. Not once. Finally… The doctor returned. There was something in his eyes that made Adrian stand before a word was spoken. “No…” The word escaped before he even knew he’d said it. The doctor lowered his gaze. “I’m so sorry…” Adrian frowned. “…Okay.” He nodded once. “So what do we do now?” The doctor remained silent. Adrian stepped forward. “Tell me what hospital.” Silence. “What specialist?” Nothing. “I’ll fly her anywhere.” His voice cracked. “I don’t care what it costs.” The doctor looked at him with unbearable kindness. “Mr. Cole…” Adrian shook his head. “No.” “There wasn’t anything either of you could have done.” “No.” “The pregnancy couldn’t be saved.” “No.” “Our baby…” His voice finally broke. “…our baby…” The doctor closed his eyes. “I’m sorry.” Everything after that… Happened in silence. ⸻ Eleanor cried until there were no tears left. Adrian didn’t cry. He sat beside her bed. Holding her hand. Staring at the empty chair in the corner. The chair where he had imagined placing their child before taking them home. When Eleanor finally whispered, “I’m sorry…” Adrian turned so quickly it almost hurt. “No.” “I failed—” “No.” “I couldn’t protect—” He cupped her face with trembling hands. “Don’t.” “I couldn’t bring our baby home.” His forehead rested against hers. “You hear me, Eleanor.” His voice was barely above a whisper. “You did nothing wrong.” She sobbed harder. He held her. Even as his own heart shattered. Because if one of them had to stay standing… It had to be him. Even if it killed him.
