# Episode 9: **Fractured Loyalties**
The ruined tower was silent, except for the ragged breathing of the survivors.
Kalen released Mira slowly, making sure she could stand on her own. Her magic had finally settled — but the aftershock was raw, heavy in the air.
Cassian stood by the shattered doorway, sword drawn, his body tense for another fight. Saphira hovered close to Mira, wide-eyed but unafraid.
It should have felt like a victory.
But Kalen knew better.
This was just the beginning of the war.
They moved fast, clearing the wreckage, covering up the signs of the battle.
If the High Lords realized how powerful Mira had become — how close she had come to destroying part of the manor itself — they wouldn’t send guards next time.
They would send assassins.
Or worse.
Kalen needed time. Time to prepare Mira. Time to prepare *them all*.
But among them, seeds of doubt had already been planted.
That night, Cassian pulled Kalen aside while Mira slept under Saphira’s watchful gaze.
"She’s dangerous," Cassian said, voice low but steady. "You saw what she did."
"I saw her survive," Kalen replied. "Something most of you wouldn't last a day doing."
"At what cost?" Cassian snapped. "That blast could've killed us. You think the Maevryn will let her walk away from that?"
"Then we make sure they never get the chance."
Cassian shook his head, frustrated. "You can't protect her forever. And what about Silas? He knew they were coming."
Kalen’s jaw clenched. "I know."
Cassian’s expression hardened. "We should deal with him. *Before he betrays us again.*"
Kalen didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
Elsewhere, Silas was already drowning in guilt.
He sat alone in the servants' courtyard, head bowed, the weight of his betrayal crushing him.
*I didn't mean for it to go that far,* he thought. *I didn’t know they'd try to kill her.*
But what he wanted didn’t matter.
He had made a choice.
And choices had consequences.
Especially here.
Saphira found him there, tucked into a corner between crumbling stone walls.
She didn’t say anything at first.
Just sat beside him, arms wrapped around her knees.
Finally, Silas whispered, "You shouldn’t be near me. I’m poison."
Saphira tilted her head thoughtfully. "Maybe," she said. "But even poison can be turned into medicine, if you know how."
Silas let out a broken laugh.
Saphira smiled softly.
And somehow, without words, made it clear:
He wasn’t unforgivable.
Not yet.
Meanwhile, Vera Moonfall was moving her pieces into position.
Her latest agent was ready: A boy with a handsome smile and dead eyes, trained since childhood in the arts of deception and assassination.
His name was **Rowan Vale**.
Officially, he was nothing — a forgotten noble son, a pawn. But under Vera’s careful hand, he had become something far more dangerous.
And now, he would infiltrate the fractured group — offering friendship, help, hope.
He would become the heart of their trust.
And when the time came, he would shatter it.
Kalen, unaware of Rowan’s approach, called a secret meeting.
In the abandoned kitchens, long after midnight, Mira, Cassian, Silas, and Saphira gathered — wary, bruised, but still willing to listen.
"I won't lie to you," Kalen began, voice sharp as broken glass. "The Maevryn want us dead. One mistake, one misstep, and they'll finish what they started."
Mira shifted uneasily.
Silas kept his head down, guilt radiating from him.
Cassian stood like a soldier, arms crossed, ready to challenge every word.
Saphira simply watched, silent but attentive.
"We can’t stay here much longer," Kalen continued. "We need a plan. Allies. Safe places."
He leaned forward, eyes burning.
"But most of all — we need to trust each other."
Cassian scoffed under his breath.
Silas flinched.
Mira bit her lip.
Saphira nodded once, firmly.
Kalen smiled grimly. "Then we start now."
Outside the crumbling kitchen doors, Rowan listened.
And smiled.
Trust was such a fragile thing.
And he would be the blade that broke it.
