Greer’s POV
"Greer? Greer? Wake up." I heard a familiar voice..
"Hey, stop behaving like a kid. You gotta stand up now. We need to talk about today's schedule. "
"Stop it Veda. She passed out like eight hours ago. Give her a break." I heard another familiar voice and this time, it was a deep, baritone voice. My eyes were still shut but the moment I fluttered my eyes opened, three faces were staring back at me upside down. I groaned from the pain I was feeling in my body. I rubbed my forehead and shut my eyes again. s**t. I opened them again and tried sitting up but I was held down by a strong hand.
I looked around this time and saw them clearly. Clearly without any problems. My mom, Calder, Wells, two other maids in uniform, a doctor and a nurse. What the hell happened? Why are there so many people in my room? I cleared my throat as my eyes landed on where Calder’s hand was resting. His hand was resting on my belly. I guess he was the one that made me lie back so I won't hurt myself. He withdrew his hand away immediately.
I cleared my throat. Before I could say something, Veda’s voice cut through the silence.
"What the hell happened to you? We found you on the floor here in your room? Did you drink? You reek of -"
"I didn't do anything. I did not drink. After Wells and I came back, I got tired and passed out on the floor." I cut her off. I knew she would make a scene out of everything. Embarrassing me right in front of these people.
"Yes, she is right, Veda. We didn't drink. I passed out on the bed too. Yesterday was exhausting." Wells testified and it was then she refrained from bugging me.
The Doctor cleared his throat.
"Ms. Greer is fine medically according to test results. You all have nothing to worry about." He said and Calder thanked him and walked out of the room with the doctor and the nurse. Wells patted my shoulder and walked out too leaving me with my mom (Veda).
She didn't even let the matters rest before she accused me again.. “I know what you are doing, Greer. You are putting up a show so I won't get married to Calder because of your selfish reasons. I couldn’t care less about what the public says. And you lie, because this wedding is happening in the next three days."
I sighed heavily and sank my fingers through my hair. I had just been revived from a syncope and all she wants to do with me is to argue. This was the last thing I wanted from her. A useless argument.
"I am not going to do this with you, mom. I just recovered from passing out and the next thing you could think of is to say this to me? C'mon mom....give me a break." I said, trying to get off the bed. I was still exhausted and my mind kept replaying the moment the pinhole lens fell off Wells’s pocket. I have other useful things like that to worry about.
"Just so you know. This wedding is happening. Whether you like it or not, I gotta warn you to stop drawing every attention to you. You are nothing but an attention seeker. In case you don't know, I, Veda, I am the main character here and not you. I am the one getting married."
I smirked, trying to understand what she was trying to get on about.
"If you are worried about the spotlight mom, you have it. You are the adult here. I am barely twenty one. I am eighteen. So tell me mom, what spotlight could your eighteen year old daughter snatch away from you? Why are you so insecure?"
The last statement didn't sit well with her and I could see how it struck a nerve in her.
She blinked it away instantly and stepped forward.
"Fine. But this marriage is happening and you are not excluded from it. That's why you need to get your weak ass down to the living room in an hour for your dress fitting. And after that, we are going to get some other things at the mall with Indira." She said and walked away before I asked her who Indira was. Then it clicked. I remembered. Indira was Wells’s girlfriend. I rolled my eyes. When had they gotten that closer to each other?
I bet she liked Indira more than me. I don't care either. She never liked me to begin with.
She slammed the door and I climbed off the bed. I glanced at the clock. It was ten o'clock in the morning. I dragged myself to the bathroom and peeled off my clothes. No one bothered to change me out of the dress I wore yesterday. Not even my own so-called mother.
Let me get dressed up while we go about this crazy schedule of hers.
I wrapped a towel around myself and stepped out of the bathroom. My phone rang and I ignored it. I wanted to focus on dressing and leaving early so she won't yell at me again.
I settled on a two piece jean shirt and top. The trouser was a short one and the top was cropped. It was showing off my belly button not that I care but I felt the need to look more beautiful. I didn't know why. I was more calm in straightening my silky hair with the straightening iron. I did a thorough makeover. I looked unrecognisable for a minute. I smiled and put on my sneakers. White sneakers. I took one of my bags and stuffed the remaining twenty dollars I have left in it. I put in my lip moisturiser too and a small rechargeable fan I bought two months ago.
I don't want Veda’s trouble. An argument is the last thing that I wanted to happen.
I walked out of the room and descended down the stairs. No one was in the living room yet. Then Calder walked in from outside with three other men in suits. They were here for office work. Because their wedding is in three days, he had to bring office work here. Our eyes met and what had happened between us flashed in my memory.
I looked away from him immediately. I can't let anybody get suspicious.
My phone distracted me and I beamed with a smile after checking the Caller ID.
It turned out to be my best friend, Cassey.
"I am back in the country. I will be attending your mom's wedding. I will get to see your handsome stepbrother Wells Rhys." She squealed on the phone.
I had to move away from the living room.
Was this girl crazy? What if he heard?
