Greer’s POV
Doing what? Goodness. I am so f****d. My entire life is going to go down the drain if it was my mum or anyone else. What if it was Wells? f*****g s**t. I am cooked. Stunned was not enough. I was shocked to the bone.
I moved closer and ducked behind the pillar where the sun pierced through the curtains casting the shadow of the person clearly to me. I didn't see the person but the shadow was familiar. Recognizable to be precise. Wells?
Was it Wells?
What if it wasn't him?
Looking at the shadow on the other side of the pillar didn't make it look like him. Jesus Christ! I am going crazy here.
The wave of anxiety surged through me down to the depth of my stomach. But then it suddenly didn't look like him. I blinked and the shadow wasn't there anymore. Was I hallucinating? Of course. Because the shadow wasn't there anymore. I have no explanations to give at all if I was caught.
What was I going to lie about? Was I going to say I came to visit him and say hello to him? Excuse me, I said hello during dinner. That wouldn't even make any sense at all. Was I going to say I brought him gifts? Hell no. Where are the gifts? What if they went to confirm and he said no? Then they'd surely know something was up.
I suck at lying.
I know and this was going to get me in trouble.
A disaster if I was not careful.
I breathed a sigh of relief as I came out of hiding and didn't see anyone there.
"Greer?"
My heart dropped as I heard a voice call my name. The whole world suddenly started spinning as I held the hem of my tiny sleep short. Beads of sweat tricked down the back of my neck, cold shivers ran down my spine and I felt weak in the knees. No, I can't give out. I can't fall. Suspicion will rise and things will get more complicated as it was already. My grip almost made my knuckles turn white. It was like oxygen was sucked out of me.
Okay, the world wasn't ending but it felt like it was. Every emotion that I felt before was doubled. They rushed back twice than before.
I turned around slowly, trying to process who the owner of the voice could be but all I knew was that it was a deep voice. A man. A woman couldn't possibly have that deep voice. As I turned fully, my eyes came in contact with Wells.
Wells.
This was going to be a nightmare.
Where do I start from?
The lies.
Where do I start from?
He opened his mouth to say something. "What are you doing? This is Dad’s hallway."
There goes the question.
I stared at him, at the cloth he was putting on. It was a blue, long sleeve shirt that he rolled up to his muscular arms and a black office pant. He must be coming from work. His hair was styled perfectly and not a single wrinkle on his shirt. He was the younger version of Calder. His eyes, lips, body. They were younger than Calder’s.
Answer the f*****g question, Greer! What the hell were you doing in Calder’s hallway? I blinked twice and then over and over again thinking of something. If I don't say anything this instant, he is going to get suspicious. He will know I was coming back from his father's bedroom to do lewd things.
C'mon say something Greer, he is going to get suspicion.
"Hum...I...I was just...." I stuttered.
I just stuttered. This was a f*****g recipe for disaster. I am screwed. This was why I said I was not good at lying. I was bad at lying.
His face morphed in confusion like he was trying to read me. Like he was trying to get me.
"You were just-" he trailed off and I got disgusted with myself. I wasn't supposed to be doing all of this. Wells and I are supposed to get to know each other. We are about to be step-siblings. We should be close and do things together. Though, not everything. To some extent.
I was meant to be comfortable with him as my stepbrother but what did I just do? I slept with his old man. I am so disgusted with myself right now. But I don't care either.
"Greer? Are you sure you are okay? Like you are actually staring into space right now. And I am asking you a question. What are you doing here?"
I braced myself up after he repeated the goddammit question. I cleared my throat as I fiddled with my fingers, finding what else to say.
"Okay...were you here to see dad?" He asked and I nodded immediately. "Of course, I was here to see him but...I...I came with my mom." I explained and he looked behind me.
"But Veda isn't here with you. You said you came with her and -"
I interrupted him. "Yes, I came with her and we talked but when they decided to get all lovey-dovey, I left them. It's grossing me out. I can't watch the two of them do adult things."
Looking at his reaction, he seemed convinced. And of course, he wouldn't like to see his father kissing a woman. It will surely gross him out. Perfect! That lie came out perfectly. Great. But what if Wells decided to ask my mom later? Would he actually do that? I guess not, unless he suspects something and looking at him, he doesn't look like someone who would blabber around looking for the "truth".
"And I don't think they were only acting lovey-dovey, they were about to get into an argument before I was able to step out."
"Oh." He muttered and stepped back.
"You are right. I don't want to be part of it. They should sort whatever was happening between them. They are adults and I don't want to meddle at all." Wells said and turned around to leave but then he stopped and turned to look at me again.
"What?" I asked, as he scanned my face.
"Are you sure you are okay? You looked like you were about to pass out when you heard my voice."
"I am fine." I managed to pull a smile. A fake smile just to push him away and he did. He turned around and he stopped again for the second time. This time, he shot me a serious look.
"I have been wanting to ask you, Greer. What exactly do you want from us? From my dad?"
I stiffened at his question.
