“Maxine.” Layla’s eyes were big and round when she stared at me. I saw the smudge lines of her eyeliner under her eyes like she has been crying. When she caught me noticing her smudged make-up, she reached to wipe it away almost look like she was ashamed. “I forgot for a moment that you live here in LA.” She tried to say it as a joke but the corner of her lips pulled down.
