Chapter 6- The Offer Still Open- Part 1

1180 Words
Adrian steps closer—but not too close. He stops a respectful distance away, as if he’s aware of the line and refuses to cross it unless I invite him. That restraint makes him more dangerous, not less. He gestures toward the table where the contract folder sits. “You can read it again,” he says. “In your room. In the morning. With a lawyer if you want.” “With a lawyer?” I repeat, startled. “Yes,” he says simply. “You should understand what you’re agreeing to.” My heart stutters. No one has ever offered me power like that—power to say no and still be treated like I matter. I stare at him. “Why are you making this so… fair?” I whisper. “Men like you don’t usually do fair.” A flicker crosses his expression. Something sharp. Then it softens again. “Because I know what it looks like when someone feels cornered,” he says. “And I won’t be the man who corners you.” My breath catches. The tension between us changes. It becomes quieter, heavier. Like something is gathering under the surface. I can’t stop the question that slips out. “Did you love her?” I ask. Adrian’s eyes darken. A long pause. Then he answers with a truth that feels like a blade: “I loved the idea that she wouldn’t leave.” My stomach twists. “And did she?” His jaw tightens. “She left when it suited her. Then came back when she saw what my name was worth.” The bitterness in his voice is faint—but it’s there. I take a slow breath. I shouldn’t care. But I do. Because the idea of him being used makes something protective rise in me—something I don’t recognize, something I didn’t know I had the right to feel. Adrian watches my face as if he can see the reaction. As if he’s memorizing it. Then his phone vibrates. Once. Twice. Three times. He doesn’t look at it immediately, but his posture changes. His shoulders tighten, his gaze flicking toward the device like he already knows who it is. He finally glances down. The air shifts. Again. I don’t see the screen, but I see Adrian’s expression turn colder—controlled, dangerous. He exhales once through his nose. Then, calmly, he places the phone face down on the table. “You’re not leaving this building alone again,” he says. My stomach drops. “What is it?” Adrian’s gaze meets mine. “It’s Celeste,” he says, voice quiet. My chest tightens. “What did she do?” Adrian hesitates—just a second too long. Then he lifts the phone and slides it across the table toward me. My fingers tremble as I pick it up. A message fills the screen. Celeste: You looked sweet tonight. Like a girl playing dress-up in a woman’s world. Celeste: Tell me, Elara… did he already put the contract in your hands? Celeste: Because I’ve signed things for him before. And I always got what I wanted. My throat tightens violently. I stare at the words until they blur. Then another message appears. Celeste: Don’t mistake his attention for safety. Adrian Vale doesn’t save women. He collects them. My breath catches. I lift my gaze to Adrian, my voice barely there. “She’s trying to get into my head.” Adrian’s eyes harden. “She’s already there.” The words hit me. Because he’s right. Because the moment she spoke to me at the gala, something shifted. It wasn’t only embarrassment. It was fear. Fear that I’m temporary. Fear that I’m a pawn. Fear that I’m making the wrong decision and I’ll be the one who pays for it. Adrian takes the phone gently from my hand, sets it down, then steps closer. His voice lowers. “Look at me,” he says. I do. His eyes are dark, steady, completely focused. “She doesn’t get to define what you are,” he says. “Not in my world.” My pulse pounds. “And what am I in your world?” The question escapes before I can stop it. Adrian’s gaze holds mine for a long second. Then he says, very quietly: “You’re the first thing she’s been afraid of in years.” My breath catches. I don’t know what to do with that. I don’t know how to stand under that kind of attention. Adrian takes one more step, close enough that I feel the heat of him, but he still doesn’t touch me. He stops at the line, waiting. As if he’s giving me the choice. My heart hammers. His voice drops into something softer. “I told you to think carefully,” he murmurs. “I meant it. Not because I don’t want you to sign.” I swallow. “Then why?” “Because once you step into this,” he says, eyes flicking to the contract folder like it’s a doorway, “it won’t let you go easily.” The same thought I had in the car. Only now it sounds like a warning. And also like a promise. I glance at the folder. The contract. The offer. Still open. Still waiting. My fingers twitch like they want to reach for it. And that terrifies me. Because the truth is, I’m not only choosing money or stability. I’m choosing proximity to a man who makes my skin hum and my pride sharpen and my heart do dangerous things. I look back up at Adrian. “Good night,” I whisper, because if I stay another minute I might do something reckless. Adrian’s gaze doesn’t soften, but something in it deepens. “Good night, Elara.” I turn and walk toward the hallway, forcing my steps to stay calm even though my entire body feels like it’s vibrating. I reach my room, close the door, and lean against it, breathing hard. My eyes drift to the contract folder in my hands—I don’t even remember picking it up, but it’s there. Like my body made the decision before my mind could. I set it on the bed and open it. The pages stare back at me, clean and unforgiving. I read the first line again. PRIVATE AGREEMENT — 90 DAYS. My fingers hover over the signature line. Not signing. Not yet. But close. So close. Then my phone vibrates. A new notification. Unknown Number: He won’t protect you from me. He never protected anyone. My blood goes cold. I stare at the message, heartbeat roaring. And just as I’m about to lock the phone, another message flashes— Adrian Vale: Do not answer. Stay in your room. I’m coming. My breath catches. Footsteps sound in the hallway outside my door—slow, deliberate. Not running. Not panicked. As if whoever is out there knows exactly how much time fear needs to grow. I hold my breath, frozen. And the doorknob begins to turn.
