Jacob Everything. Leah said it once, then walked past me. No explanation. No pause. No attempt to make it easier for anyone standing in that corridor. Just one word. Everything. I watched her walk toward the elevators. She did not look back. For a second, I almost followed. Almost. Then Lizzie came out of Edward’s room behind me. “He’s asleep,” she said. I turned. She was watching my face. Not Edward’s door. Not the nurse’s station. Me. “What happened?” Lizzie asked. “I don’t know.” “You were talking to Leah.” “She came out of Edward’s room,” I said. Lizzie’s mouth tightened. “I saw that part.” There was something in her voice I did not want to hear. Not now. Maybe not ever. “She looked upset,” I said. Lizzie laughed once, short and sharp, then seemed to regret it.
