I waited until she was in her room changing out of her uniform before I called Jacob.
He answered on the second ring.
“Leah?” he said. “Is Bella okay?”
“She’s fine. Nothing happened to Bella.”
His breathing changed. “Okay.”
“I need you to come early before you take her to dinner.”
“What happened?”
“I need to tell you something in person.”
“How early?”
“Five.”
“I’ll be there,” Jacob said.
I called Olivia next.
She answered with, “Do I need shoes?”
“Yes.”
“Fight shoes or friend shoes?”
“Take Bella for a walk around the courtyard shoes.”
Olivia went quiet for half a second.
“You’re telling Jacob?” she asked.
“Yes.”
“All of it?”
“Yes.”
“Good,” Olivia said. “He needs to know. And Bella does not need to be in earshot.”
“I know.”
“I’ll be there at four-fifty.”
