Lily’s eyes darted to me and I shrugged slightly. I wasn’t ashamed of my lifestyle.
“Oh I don’t think he’s as bad as the media paints him. You know he’s my sister’s friend, which means he spent a lot of time with my family. I got to see the real him during those occasions. On one of them, he summoned up the courage to ask me out. Apparently, he’d been harboring a crush on me for a while.”
The last bit was not part of the script, but my mother’s smile softened after she said it.
“But you didn’t say yes immediately, you kept him waiting till that school affair. Your announcement wouldn’t have caused quite a stir if it was planned better.”
