Chapter 2

The Fall on 4th Street David’s ten days in Abuja were supposed to be quiet. No cases, no late nights at the office, just family and the slow pace of home. Instead, he met Hope on day four. She wasn’t his type—not in the way Chidimma was, or the women he usually noticed. Hope was plain by most standards: shorter than average, round face, skin a shade darker than his, with nothing flashy about her clothes or her manner. She worked at the pharmacy near his cousin’s place, and he’d gone in for painkillers after a long drive. She asked if he needed help reading the dosage. He asked for her number. Chasing her wasn’t hard. She said yes to dinner on the second ask, and by the sixth day she was in his apartment, cooking egusi in his kitchen because he’d complained about eating out every night. He could have taken it further. She didn’t say no, didn’t pull away when he stood close behind her at the counter. But David didn’t want to so they ate, talked about her younger brother in school, laughed about how bad his own cooking was, and when she was done she packed up and left before 11 PM. On his last day in Abuja, he went to see a cadet in the EFCC Academy in Karu, His aunt had told him about her, it was meant to be an arranged marriage of some sort when she passes out of the Academy He didn’t really want to, but something in him told him to just go have a look at her who knows he might like her. After a brief conversation with her, he left. His car was parked outside for security reasons, and just about as he was about to enter his car he saw her.. He didn’t know it at the time but this lady going to change his world in ways he didn’t know was possible. He thought it was business as usual, He saw two beautiful ladies walking along the street and decided to chase after one of them, the tall darker one.. Her name was Chandeline. The road near the EFCC Academy was poorly lit. He was walking towards the two ladies when he misstepped, his foot catching on a broken edge of concrete. The c***k in his toe was immediate and sharp.
