Evelyn
I'm sitting on the sofa, reading a book I found in a bookcase. I've read The Great Gatsby a couple of times before, but I like to read a good book again.
"Knock knock!" someone makes a soud to get my attention.
I turn around and see a girl, around my age, at the doorway.
"Hello there! I'm Kira and I'm so happy to finally meet you!" she comes in, getting closer to me and opening her arms like she is comming for a hug. I don't even manage to lay the book down, she is already emracing me.
"Hi! I'm Evelyn." I reply surprised.
"God you're gorgeous! I've never seen eyes so bright jet so intense!" she is lookingme right in the eyes.
"Thank you..." I say a little uncomfortably: "You are also very beautiful."
And she indeed is. She has long, straight and shiny dark hair, brown eyes and the brightest, most sincere smile I've ever seen.
She just smiles at my words and continues: "Here, I brought you some clothes and other stuff because I know you don't have anything here and a girl needs a lot!" she emphasized the last word, making a grimace.
"A douche gel, shampoo, deo, pads..." she named the things as she got them out of the bag and back into it again.
Pads?! Oh my God! Tank you for sending this girl! I am about to get my period and I was starting to worry.
"And here.. T-shirts, sweatpants...I didn't know what size you are, but with this there should not be problems. Also underwear . I should give it all to Nanna to handle.."
"Kira?" Dianna calls from the doorway.
"Nanna!" Kira jumps from the sofa to give Dianna a hug.
"I knew it was you the minute I heard all that chatter."
"I missed you so so mugh! Sorry I couldn't come sooner, I had so much to do!"
"It's alright my dear, how's the work?"
"Fantastic! So many people are calling, so many satisfied customers.."
This girl's energy is so intense and contagious. I find myself smiling from ear to ear. And all the things she remembered to bring to me. She is a savior, I could never forget her this.
"Are you staying for lunch?"
"Can I hope for your famous chicken and dumpling soup?"
"Of course my dear. I'll go right to it." Dianna says with a wink and leaves us.
"So...How have they treated you here? Dianna is like a mother to everyone." Kira turns back to me.
"She really is. I don't think I was ever looked after with so much care and attention."
"And Theodore? He can be tough at first.."
"Tell me about it."
"But he is actually great, very reliable and loyal."
We just look at each other for a moment. I don't really feel like denying it, because I don't want us to drift in another direction. We had a nice start.
"So, you are also from around here?" I try to change the subject.
"Yes. I actually almost end up living here. But it's too remote. So I just come by... Quite often. Sometimes it's almost like I live here." she says, smiling again.
"So, you stay in the city or something?" the city can't be that far then.
"Yup, I have my own business there."
"And you came here from there?" and the road can't be that covered in snow.
She got a little lost by my question.
"You managed to break through?" I continue looking innocent.
"Oh! You mean the roads? Yea.. The roads... They are not clear yet. I was actually very lucky you know. I.. I came with the Communal Service workers. Yes. They are really amazing."
Something tells me she is just making this up on the spot. But I am gonna go with the flow.
"Yes, totally lucky. How did you almost end up living here?"
"Well we practically grew up together. Me, Theo and my brother Kane. And Dianna was like a mother to us. She was always looking after us, cooking to us, cleaning... It was very hard when we all left to study in the city. Eventually Theo got back so that Dianna doesn't stay alone. But I was kind of hoping she and John would get closer, if you know what I mean."
I realised this girl can talk a lot. I chuckle, she is really likable.
"John also comes a lot here. But you know, the weather made him stay at his home" she continues emphasizing that last sentence. Guess I scored with that one.
After a while of chatting, we go to the dining room to help Dianna serve the table.
I got a sudden unpleasant feeling when I realised that it was served for four people. That means Theodore will join us. I have never spent that much time with him.
"Take your seats kids, the food is comming!" announces Dianna carrying a large pot.
I sit next to Kira and Dianna takes a seat across Kira.
"God it smells terrific!" Kira exclaims happily.
It indeed smells amazing.
"Are those Kira's favorite dumplings?" Theodore finally emerges. He takes a seat at the head of the table.
"The best dish made by the best cook in the whole world!"
"I guess that catering food is not that good." he tease her.
"My food is very good, thank you very much." she answers him pretending to be mad: "But homemade is homemade."
We all start to eat. I can't believe it even tastes better then it smells!
"Dianna, this is amazing! Kira is definitely not exaggerating." I complimet her.
"Oh kids stop it. Dish like every other dish. When is Kane going to come again? I haven't seen him since he brought Dr. Marlow here."
"He is lost case Nanna. He has completely his head for that girl. I just hope he won't do anything stupid." says Kira, this time really annoyed.
"I don't know why are you so against young love. You two could find someone too."
"Nanna she is using him! All he does is take her out, pay for her sopping sprees... He doesn't even have time to see me."
As they speak, I am focusing on eating. Since Theodore came I have a strog feeling of his presence and it's making me nervous. I don't even look towards Kira because I might see him as well. Luckily he is not sitting right next to me.
"Evelyn..?"
"Yes?" I'm called from my thoughts.
"Do you have a significant other?" asks Kira.
"No, I don't."
"Smart girt!" she smiles at me. "Don't look at me like that Nanna. You're also single."
"That's exactly why I'm telling you this. I got lucky and I have you. But it's not nice to be all alone."
As they keep talking about kids, families and adoption I glance at Theodore. I get surprised as I see him looking at me under the eyebrows. When he catches my look he just continues to stare at me, like he is trying to fathom me. And I can't seem to break it off.
