Shadows and Questions

866 Words
Ana Sterling woke to the quiet hum of the city outside. The previous night replayed in her mind, Jaxon’s words, his touch, his sudden distance. And Mira Vaughn’s unexpected presence. She wrapped her arms around herself and sat on the edge of the bed, her wedding dress still slightly wrinkled from the chaos of emotions. Why did Mira come here? She thought….. And why is Jaxon so cold one moment and so close the next? Her heart pounded. Questions she had pushed aside before now demanded attention. She picked up her phone and stared at it blankly. No new messages. But the unknown number from last night—the one warning her—kept repeating in her mind: The truth is closer than you think. Ana couldn’t ignore it anymore. She needed answers. And there was only one person she could confront first: her father. She got ready to leave the house. A cold feeling in her stomach. Afraid of what’s to come next. She dressed up in a black dress and flats, sunglasses on, to cover the proof of a sleepless night written on her face. She got into her car and drove off in a black BMW Downstairs, Victor Sterling sat reading the morning papers. His presence was calm, collected, the image of the powerful patriarch. Ana approached him cautiously. “Dad…” He looked up, smiling. “Good morning, Ana. You look… thoughtful.” She clenched her hands at her sides. “I have questions. About last night, about business, about everything. I need to know the truth.” Victor’s smile tightened slightly. “Ana, you worry too much. Not everything needs to be questioned.” “I do need to know,” she said, stepping closer. “I saw documents last night. Transfers. Accounts. I… I don’t understand what’s happening. How could you hide things from me?” Victor’s eyes flickered for a moment—something unreadable—but he recovered quickly. “Ana, everything I do is for the family. You must trust me. Some truths are… complicated.” Ana shook her head. “Complicated? Or dangerous? I’m not a child anymore. I deserve to know if I’m living a lie.” Victor’s face darkened briefly. “You are married into Jaxon Blackwood’s world now. Some knowledge… could hurt more than protect you.” Her chest tightened. “Then I’ll take that risk. I need to understand my own life, my own choices. Even if it means questioning you.” Victor leaned back, silent for a moment, and finally said, “Be careful, Ana. There are things you are not ready for yet. And some things… some people… will take advantage of your curiosity.” Ana’s stomach twisted. Is he warning me… or threatening me? She swallowed hard, determination rising. “Then I’ll watch. I’ll learn. And I’ll decide what’s safe for me.” Victor said nothing further. He returned to his papers, leaving Ana with a mixture of anger, fear, and resolve. She stormed out of the room, the door slammed. Got into her car and drove off. The doorbell rang unexpectedly. Ana’s pulse jumped. Jaxon stepped into the living room, tense. “Who…?” Mira Vaughn appeared, composed, sharp, and unmistakably deliberate. “Good morning,” she said, her gaze flicking between Ana and Jaxon. “I hope I’m not intruding… though sometimes disruption is necessary.” Jaxon immediately stepped closer to Ana. “Mira, this isn’t a visit you need to make.” Mira ignored him, smiling faintly at Ana. “I just wanted to ensure my favorite newlyweds are… awake to reality. You see, being married to Jaxon Blackwood can be enlightening… and dangerous.” Ana’s stomach twisted. Desire, fear, and unease churned. Jaxon’s expression shifted again—hot and cold within seconds. He was protective, tense, and unpredictable. Mira leaned closer to Ana. “Be cautious. Not everyone here is as they appear. Some secrets are better uncovered while someone watches.” With that, she left, the door clicking softly behind her. Ana looked at Jaxon, confusion overwhelming her. “Why is she here?” He ran a hand through his hair. “She knows things… things I’m not ready to tell you.” Ana’s chest tightened. “But I need to know! I’m your wife—I deserve to know.” He took a step closer, close enough that she felt both heat and distance at once. “Not everything is safe for you yet. Not everything about your father… or mine.” And I owe you no explanation. “ Ana’s pulse raced. “Why are you so… hot and cold?” Jaxon hesitated. “Because sometimes the truth can destroy more than lies ever could.” And I do not know if I can trust you “ Ana swallowed. Confusion, fear, and desire tangled inside her. “Stay alert,” he said, finally. “Stay close. But trust no one. Not yet.” Ana nodded, uncertain, aware that everything she thought she knew—about her father, her husband, and even herself—was shifting. And somewhere in the shadows, the unknown presence tied to the Blackwood name remained, watching, waiting, and moving closer.
