CHAPTER THREE

1555 Words
The blue-eyed girl gives me a show stopping smile, “No problem!” She quickly glances over to her table when a girl in a cheerleading uniform calls her name. “I have to go, but I'll see you later, Amelia.” The blonde waves before sliding out of the booth and making her way back over to the large group of athletes. Ugh, I really wish that I was sitting over there! “I like her, she's really nice.” “Yeah, she’s super nice.” Stella replies with heavy sarcasm. I furrow my eyebrows at Stella’s distaste towards the cheerleader. “What’s that supposed to mean?” The raven-haired girl sighs as she places the uneaten half of her chocolate chunk cookie down in the clear plastic that it came packaged in. “You don't think that she seems a tad off?” she asks. I immediately shake my head, “No, she was really perky though.” “Honestly, I think that she has a crush on you.” Stella speculates. “I mean, she barely even looked at me.” It takes everything in me not to burst into laughter at my best friend’s incredulous theory. “Emma definitely doesn't like me in that way.” I assure Stella. “I think I saw her flirting with Easton earlier.” “She could go both ways!” “If she did then wouldn't she be into both of you since you're twins?” I assume that I riddle my best friend clueless due to her going completely silent. “Exactly.” I get the last word. 4:37pm Emma is currently sitting behind a long white folding table, sat in between two other cheerleaders. All three of the girls are in their cheerleading uniforms, having worn them all day. The girls who are sitting on either end of the table could not look more uninterested. One of the girls is staring at us with a bored look on her face as she twirls a strand of her perfectly curled hair around her finger. The other girl is chewing lazily on a piece of gum as she files her neatly manicured fingernails. The only one who looks even remotely interested in being here is Emma. “So, you all want to be cheerleaders?” Emma questions. Me, as well as the rest of the girls on the metal bleachers, silently nod our heads at the question. “Obviously, otherwise you wouldn't be here.” the blonde laughs at her own joke. I watch as her eyes briefly glance over the paper in front of her, “Today we will be judging you on your jumps, tumbling abilities, cheers, and flexibility.” She lists off. “We are only looking for three new additions to our team—Good luck!” She looks down at the pink clipboard on the table in front of her. “First up is Bianca Gonzalez.” 5:42pm Emma smiles at the girl who just tried out before looking down at her clipboard and writing something down. I notice that tears begin to well up in the girl’s eyes as she makes her way back towards the cold metal bleachers. “I literally did so bad!” I faintly hear the girl cry out. “No, you didn't.” one of her friends tries to comfort her. “I could barely sit in my splits and I fell out of all of my flips.” This girl is absolutely hysterical yet the cheerleaders at the table could not care less. “Amelia Montgomery!” Emma calls my name. My heart begins to race in my chest. “You got this! If I can do it, you can definitely do it.” Stella encourages. Stella has already tried out and she was better than amazing. She literally raised the bar for all of us who are trying out today and she was only the third person to try out! I’m the fifteenth person to try out and to say I'm nervous would be an understatement. I slowly exhale before standing up and making my way down the large set of stairs. A few moments pass before I stop at the tape mark that is in front of the table. Emma smiles sweetly at me, “Are you ready?” she asks. I nod my head at her question. She grabs ahold of her clipboard so that it is now easier to write on. “Can you do a hurdler, a toe touch, and then another toe touch?” she requests. I do as she says, jumping up into a front hurdler and following it with two toe touches. When I land, after the second toe touch, I make sure that my feet are parallel to each other. I also assure that my hands are flat against the side of my thighs. Emma seems impressed as she nods and jots something down on her board. “How about a back walkover, followed by a back handspring and a back tuck?” I nod and do as she says. After I land my back tuck I quickly make my way back towards the piece of tape on the gymnasium floor. Emma seems genuinely impressed, again—Even the two girls sitting beside her seem a bit surprised. I guess that all of the practicing that I did over the summer was beneficial. “Now onto cheers—Repeat after me,” she informs. “Bulldogs are we!” She claps twice. “Let's go, team!” I plaster a big smile onto my face and chant, “Bulldogs are we!” I clap twice. “Let's go, team!” I make sure to chant clearly and loudly. Emma nods before writing something down on the paper attached to her pink clipboard. “Thank you, Amelia.” I nod before making my way towards the bleachers. ‘Honestly, she wasn't even that good.’ I hear a girl comment from the bleachers. ‘Yeah, I don't understand why they like her so much.’ her friend agrees. I ignore the two of them as I go back to where I was previously sitting beside Stella. And now we wait, I guess… 6:32pm Emma makes her way towards the tape strip with her clipboard in hand. “Now that you've all had a chance to try out, Coach Kelly and I agreed that I would choose who would best fit the team.” she informs us. “With that being said, the first addition to the Clearwater High School Cheerleading Team is Bianca Gonzalez.” Emma smiles. Bianca rises from her seat, loud screams of excitement exiting her mouth. One of the cheerleaders who were sitting at the table with Emma earlier hands Bianca a folded blue and white uniform. Well, that explains why they asked for our dress size when we were filling out the form. Emma and the two cheerleaders briefly congratulate her. “Next up is…Avery Nicole.” Avery hugs the girl sitting beside her before making her way towards the cheerleaders. The other cheerleader hands Avery her uniform before she congratulates her. Emma smiles at her but remains silent. As Avery makes her way over to Bianca, who is standing off to the side, Emma sets her clipboard down on the white table and exchanges it for a packaged cheer uniform. “And last, but definitely not least, the final cheerleader to join the team…” Emma pauses in order to build anticipation. “Amelia Montgomery!” I try my hardest not to scream for joy as I make my way down the metal bleachers. ‘Are you f*****g serious?!’ a girl from the front row complains. Emma ignores the deranged girl as I approach her, “Congratulations! You're officially a Clearwater High bulldog.” she smirks, holding out the packaged uniform. “Thank you so much!” I wrap my arms around her. This surprises the blonde, but she hugs me back nonetheless. I accepted the uniform from her before making my way towards Bianca and Avery. The three of us squeal and jump up and down with excitement at the confirmation of finally being cheerleaders. “For those of you who didn't make the team, you can try out again during the winter or spring! It was nice seeing you all. Please don't let the door hit you on the way out!” Okay… that was a little passive-aggressive. As the annoyed girls begin to slowly exit the gymnasium and enter the girls locker room, Emma makes her way over to the table to talk to the other two girls wearing cheer uniforms. “Oh my god!” Avery gasps. “Okay, like, side note—you’re both so f*****g pretty.” My eyes widened a little at her compliment, “Are you kidding?! You’re gorgeous.” I voice. “Yeah,” Bianca cuts in. “Like, what did you do to make your hair so shiny?” “It’s this special hair conditioner.” Avery whispers as if she is telling us a government secret. “My mom is, like, a beautician and she made it for me—I can totally see if she can make some for you guys.” she suggests. Both Bianca and I agree.
